How can a DM not ... be both? Especially a DM that A. Focuses on a single character such as Yoss/Tormak have, and B. At any drop of the hat play numerous NPC's? Not that they need me to defend them but.. it seems kind of like.. obvious to me.. that being a DM requires you to be a good 'Role player..' and 'Roleplayer' by those definitions.
Maybe I just see things totally odd. But.. uh. Yeah.

I play between 10 - 40 characters regularly.
I only devote effort to one character.
Much like Uce, my attention span for characters is a feature not something that needs to be a negative thing. In fact I would say that my attention span for characters is what gives me some intuitive insight into making critters to smash all your characters into the floor. Because I've played so many characters and therefore builds it makes it far easier to balance appropriately.
The flipside of that is that alot of you dislike me because I'm pretty much IC and OOCly in party "Do it this way because its better and faster" which means I'm generally stuck to soloing and playing with a specific group of players. Or the otherside which is having people vacuum my back because its an easy way to thirty. Or the third side which is when I'm short and to the point on the forums you feel the need to take it out on me ingame (has happened more times than I care to mention). Or when people take liberties and tell me in game when I'm trying to concentrate on what I'm doing ICly getting spammed to shit in tells.
My issue with the One Character thing is that some people have such an attachment to their character that if I do something towards that character in a negative context they think I'm doing it at the player. For my part I don't even consider the player/dm behind the character anymore, to me you are blank face and your emotional reaction to whats happening to your character means nothing to me.

Two Mains usually, though increasingly becoming one.
Calin & Xal. Calins the one I'd probably stick with. Xals to old, its hard to put effort into him, espically since my style of RP has developed into something different these days. Xal was made in an age when my rp was more "passion of the moment".
I have lots of other characters I play when I'm bored. Generally in order of preference.

I have 4-5 characters that can be called developed in terms of personality and motivation. I also have 30+ in my vault that I tried and quickly tired of. I suppose I could say that I have one main, but as of late I am playing him less and spread myself more evenly out on the four others I also enjoy playing.

Valygar 'Stonesnake' Stark -Human Ranger Garret Smith - Archer and peddler of deity-statuettes Dáin Saltbeard - Dwarven sailor and fencer. No, I'm not joking.
I generally don't stick with a character long after they hit 30.
Usually I have a concept for a character that I want to try out and once I'm satiated with it, I have a bunch of other concepts I want to try out and have a hard time picking which to do next. Though I eventually do. I've been here a few years and havn't had a single character for long.
I have noticed that it seems people who stick to one character for months and years and such score more DCs, though.

Honestly, I do have these urges where I want to instantly change characters whenever the creeping feeling of 'boredom' comes into play. Like just walking nice and happy in the woods, petting the cute little badgers and kicking the elves, before finally stopping straight there in place and saying to myself "Now, why don't I make a Sorcerer"?
Of course, tried making a good build for it earlier. Although for some reason, probably the magnetic sides of my hormones telling me, that making a male Sorcerer would probably be a bad idea. So a creation of a nice, lovely Sun Elf that was also a sorcerer with the beauty of a shining angel was put to shame.
I only keep myself limited to atleast two of three characters now because of the fact that I do not wish to get tethered to the the ground at one point fretting to myself on how there'll be two different events going on and I won't have enough time to do them both! First character is usually the main and the other two are mainly there for purely boredom reasonings, such as my Warrior for slaughtering Beholders and the Paladin that... well.. hunt a bit with him to pass time levelling, but all those damn buffings and spellings are such a pain that I can't be bothered to deal with, thus best thing to do is simply RP with him. Barra'Keeshe is my main, 'cos he's fun to RP with (even if the card writing does get a bit repetitive on RP stakes) and simply interesting when the mood takes time to hold.

That I have a problem with as well, since the first time I made my character on Amia was a sort of long stretch of walking because the way I was such a n00b at building that I nearly gave up. Of course, when I did reach max I didn't know what to do afterwards and that still goes on with some of my other characters. Seriously though, having a max level sneaky guy that wears black is still fun for level 30. ^.^

I have a horrible problem with creating new characters. I made one two days ago and I'm thinking of a new one today. Sometimes I make a new one because I hopelessly messed up a build mechanically. Sometimes it's because I thought I'd enjoy the RP but I don't. Sometimes I get frustrated because I wanted to do something but I end up not being able to. Sometimes I simply get bored. Actually, a lot of the times I simply get bored.

well where some people tend to change the factions of their characters, swap deities and aligments, and do rebuilds, other people make new characters. So, yeah, I have the problem sticking with one toon. I have like 10+ for sure.
I hate creating new characters because I tend to spend as much time and energy thinking of a name for a character as I do actually playing that character. As a result, I have only three unarchived characters in my vault, and two with anything vaguely resembling a personality.

I have about 8 characters in my vault, but only about four that I care to play.
I tend to create a character and throw them against the wall to see if they stick. Meaning that I see if the toon develops a personality and a reason for being, and if it does, then I play it. I tend to check the player list before I choose, to see what character might fit in more with the current server "mood". More often I just pick one of the four, and run with it...

I definitely have this problem, though I've settled down to basically two or three main characters with about 20 alts. (I'm exaggerating a little here.) I get a lot of crap for it, but meh. I get an idea, I wanna do it. Sue me.
I have this problem, but as stated previously, feature, not bug.
Most of my characters are spur-of-the-moment. I'll be wandering around, and suddenly think of an interesting personality, rush to the computer, make the character and trundle away. While this means I end up with tons of characters, and only a few last long, it also means that their personalities are heavily influenced by their experiances in game. As well as this, when I make a character that I love, it is an incredibly welcome surprise. Elail, for example, who was made purely because I had a neat idea, and now is one of my most beloved characters, along with being the one of the three that can successfully fool players both IC and OOC about her identity.
Oddly enough, this doesn't seem to take from character depth. Some of my characters have their backstories made up in the space of three seconds, yet they seem to flow as naturally as a well-written rhyme. I do end up with a few characters that are little fun to play for long, but generally they are "reincarnated" in another form, taking the bits of them that work and adjusting the bits that don't.
Only once or twice have a tried to create a character with careful planning; the first was Garnith, made back when I first got NWN, and as he is essentially based off myself, there was little work to do. The other is Kane, and he turned out quite well, but is somewhat dull to play without his brother Quokka online, as they provide an excellent contrast to each other.
Currently I have: 5 "perfect" characters, 3 that need some tweaking, and a crazy-huge number that are archived or still sitting in my vault.

Not really much of a problem with me. I make one character, and settle with that one. Brena was my main, when she retired, I made Mayae. I honestly /can't/ play multiple characters at once. When I have one that I really click with, Mayae for example, I simply can't focus on playing any others. As I said, it's not a problem for me because I enjoy it that way.
