It doesn't detect the demon blood but the taint of evil, so to say.

Some outsiders have an evil aura because of their blood and are treated as being evil for spell effects, even though their true alignment might be different.

I also remembered some DM saying that accusing the High Priest of order something of being evil, right after he was in a crusade against demons, would be a bad idea.

Actually they would only know that you radiate an aura of evil. Mind, that doesn't has to be you. You just might have a sword with you which you used to slay demons with, and who is coated in their blood, and hence does radiate an evil aura which will grow weaker over time.

Also, if they break Line of sight do they need to start all over again.
Not to forget that some simple sheet of metal might help too.

Funny that detect evil would detect demon blood, shouldnt a pally's weapon just be coated in that anyway?

It'd detect the strong malign aura, yes, but only if the paladin was looking at it.

I doubt it'd be strong. It is dead, and long dead at that. Magic auras fade quickly when the source is gone.

Okay, you'd be able to detect the lingering aura for 1d6*10 minutes.
