Looking over details about crafting before I plunge head first and I could not make sense of these two sentences-

-Malign powers don't count twoards your power limit on an item.
-Equippable items may have a maximum of 3 benign powers.

I looked up benign and malign and I got these definitions that further my confusion-

malign-

–verb (used with object)

1. to speak harmful untruths about; speak evil of; slander; defame: to malign an honorable man.
–adjective

2. evil in effect; pernicious; baleful; injurious: The gloomy house had a malign influence upon her usually good mood.

3. having or showing an evil disposition; malevolent; malicious.

Benign-

1. having a kindly disposition; gracious: a benign king.

2. showing or expressive of gentleness or kindness: a benign smile.

3. favorable; propitious: a series of benign omens and configurations in the heavens.

4. (of weather) salubrious; healthful; pleasant or beneficial.

5. Pathology. not malignant; self-limiting.

Malign = Bad
Benign = Good

It basically means that bad powers (Decreased skill or ability modifiers, etc) dont count towards the power limit.

Quote:
2. evil in effect;

Anything that Takes Away Stats = Malign (as something undesirable)

Consider it like Slang use.

Quote:
3. favorable;

Anything that Adds Stats = Benign (as something favorable in that you gain)

Wait.

How can a +5 Enhancement count as 4 powers when only 3 are allowed on an item?

Weapons, armors and gloves have 4 powers.

+5 enhancement is in regards to weapons. 4 powers.

+5 AC is 3 powers.

Malign: from Latin malignus, from; male (badly) + gignere (to beget.)

1 a : evil in nature, influence, or effect : injurious
1 b : malignant, virulent
2 : having or showing intense often vicious ill will : malevolent, sinister.

Benign: from Latin benignus, from; bene (a boon) + gignere (to beget)

1 : of a gentle disposition : gracious
2 a : showing kindness and gentleness
2 b : favorable, wholesome
3 a : of a mild type or character that does not threaten health or life; especially : not becoming cancerous
3 b : having no significant effect : harmless

With help from Merriam and Webster, and a little latin.

I alays remembered Malignant and Benign from TUMORS! The way they were tuaght to me in one of those classes I slept through in highschool in the early 90s was: Malignant tumors grow and cause lots more harm, ofcourse I was also in French at the time and "Mal" means BAD. benign tumors were ones that were one size, and could infact be harmless if you were lucky.

On an odd side note, that same health teacher who said drink lots of OJ and spend time outside, get lots of vitamins to avoid cancer an you'll live and be healthy forever died less than 3 years after I graduated from skin cancer from too much sun exposure.

It basically means that if you find a super-cool item and it has both advantages and disadvantages, the disadvantages don't cost you any powers. You can't take them off with the 'Remove property' feature either, though.

Greater Bracers of Fury, for example. They have a decreased Will save modifier, and +3 to STR, so you could whip off the casting of Blood Frenzy and add something else in that costs one power.

More clearly:

Mighty +2 means that a PC with a STR Mod or higher will gain +2dmg to their ranged attacks.

A PC with a STR Mod of only 1, using a Mighty +2, will only gain +1dmg.

A PC with a STR Mod of 3, using Mighty +2, will only gain +2dmg.
