How does one play an assassin without exposing themselves to their target and telling them they are about to attack?

I think some rules should maybe be alightly adjusted for someone who has the assassin class in order to make it -realistic-. I understand that there should be some warning given, but it's just hard to kill someone from the shadows with the current rules reguarding assassinations.

Everyone bitches to a DM when the die anyways, rules followed or not it seems. It's just that it's not so fun when you have to fight some armored fighter class when you have no AC and you don't cath them flat-footed and can't get any sneaks in.

Can a warning be given as a tell or something? I mean I understand some warning given, but face to face is silly in most cases as an assassin.

I think you can ask a DM to supervise and they will be able to sort out the preparations with you?

Can't find the link to the rules page for some reason.. anyhow you only need to alert a dm that you want to assasinate someone, however, should there be no dm online you must present the victim with a warning though this is fine with tells, there's absolutely no need to walk up icly face to face and do it.

And it does not need to happen all at the same time, say you can inform the dm or victim a few days ahead of when you actually plan to do the murderous deed.

Erm, you don't have to give them an IC warning or an IC way out of the fight, if you have already informed the DM team and/or the player that he has been targeted for assassination, that's the whole point.
You can attack anytime, but make sure the other side isn't afk, in the process of leveling up or otherwise unable to defend, due to OOC reasons.

How does someone know if a player is afk or not?

Deal with AFKness IG by not just logging in and jumping them as soon as you've got a go ahead from a DM. Most real life assassins don't really /just/ pop out and down their mark. Normally a good amount tailing and noting habits to find that perfect time to strike. If they are not moving or talking after you've been spotting them for at least ten minutes then they are likely AFK

Also on the topic of hitting your mark with no DM around I quote you from one of my friends of another server who's one of the best assassins I've ever seen played.

Quote:
Now, RPing and retaining the element of surprise is rather easy to do. I'll give you an example of how I use Gaelyn: He will shadow his target while disguised and, perhaps, run into them in a tavern. He would emerge from his stealth and strike up a conversation with the person. Meanwhile, OOC over tells and such, I note that Gaelyn is looking over him for weapons and he doesn't quite seem as friendly as his voice sounds. Then, I will "dislike" the other character as they are leaving. Beyond that, they're fair game. Most others who're assassinated seem to enjoy this OOC warning, while others simply take advantage of it and call their epic friend over to protect them, but I'm not here to complain, just give an example.

I've also seen him be rather direct on it and walk up and leave the person a IC note on the table along the morbidly cheerful lines "I wouldn't get up to leave cause someone's waiting to kill you when you do"

doesn't matter, they should log off if they are afk.

If by some odd chance i ever get an assassin on my tail and i get afk: Feel free to kill my char.

Not everyone thinks like you, obviously :-p
Gaelyn's example was very good and to the point. As a general advice, you -as the assassin- should try an approach that ensures you keep an element of surprise AND that the target has enough time to realize the situation he's in. The more enjoyable you make it for the other player (mainly via causing specific emotions) the more successful the assassination attempt is. Whether you win or lose doesn't really matter.

Oh and ... if you're unsure about how the target is going to react OOC-ly, better inform the player than a DM. Do both, if you can. OOC grief/abusive tells spoil the fun.

we were already having few discussions about this.
check on this topic.

anyway there is alot of ways to do so. you don't have to backstab him. get along with him, ask him for a drink and than give him some bad poisoned beer.

alas i belive that the main problem of being an assassin on amia is actually your name above your head. if it wasn't there, being an assassin would be GREAT stuff.

I'd say if someone was going to assassinate one of my characters an sent me a tell I wouldn't buff up and run around being ready for a hit unless the info leaked out to me IC. Then again, that's just me. Ofcourse, my natural reaction to being backstabbed like that on my main character will be to turn anround and smite evil on you, which for some reason I always seem to crit on, because well you'd have to be evil to be sneaking up and trying to murder a paladin like that in my book.

But yeah, if someone just starts buffing when you tell them they're your mark you can either tell a DM about it or wait till thier buffs fade and then they've wasted those spells untill they rest again so hit em while they're resting, you are an assassin and the idea is to kill the other person with as little risk to your own life as possible after all.

Mhmm, would be very much just you. It may not even be purposely done, but people don't want to lose their hard worked on characters to an assassin, they subconciously avoid populated places, take round about routes and start acting more and more paranoid about stuff. I mean, it's like playing tag, and being told you are going to be tagged next, but your not allowed to act like you know. Just isn't going to happen.

Oh btw, I'm pretty sure the Assassination rules are meant for the Assassin class. The whole point is, you -don't- give warning, you just tell the DM and you wait for the time when your mark is most vulnerable (resting, near death, whatever) and you strike. If they live, you've stuffed up big time.

DMs always ask me for an IC reason for assassination. Be prepared to give an answer. Basically, you need to forward a plot or have a reason, not just because you feel like random violence.

No, the Assassination Rules apply to everyone. Not just Assassin-Class Individuals.

Though you will get several cool points from me if you murder someone with the assassin class.

First things first:

..And now I've gotten that out of my system, I have to say something.
If you're going to assassinate someone, get a DM to tell that person "You feel like someone's watching you" Or something along those lines.
Once you've done that, wait for a while until you think they're off-guard and proceed to RP out an assassination.
Or, instead of following the tips I just posted here, look in this thread.
