Is the server down, and has been down, for the entirety of the day? It seems like no one is talking about it on the forums, and as such, I wonder if I am the only one missing something or other.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's been down the whole day. Forums just came back up only a few minutes ago.

They are updating it but obviously something went wrong. It´s been down now for 14 hours. I wonder also, when it will be back up again :(

Eh, it will be back when it's back. Just sit in chat and abuse people, thats what we usually do.

It went down because Windows Update has a bug that shuts the server down instead of doing what the button says, ie, "install updates and restart computer".

Sounds like you should upgrade it to a computer with LOM. You could then power up the computer remotely, VPN, start the NWN server.

The downside. Downtime for the server would be longer while doing this. Unless it's prepared on an alternative harddrive, and then just hotswitch the HD.

Well, technically the problem comes from it being a windows server. But that was Mag's choice.

It could be worse though, it could be a Mac server.

Don't say that! Oh gods I'll have nightmares for ages!

Also, server's back up. Wonder what was updated.

It was a regular, automatic Windows Update, as said. Nothing fancier.

Yups, but that has nothing to do with the server being down (except for the bug part).

I knew about this little bug, in fact. I once shut down the server the same way myself, it's easy to be fooled by it (remember that it really says "update and restart", not "update and shut down"). But alas, I was in the kitchen getting a drink and didn't make it in time to stop him from pressing the nasty little button...

Still, blame MicroSoft. For once they truly deserve it.

I'll check my watch the next 10 times and give you an average.

Anyway, when the server shuts down it kinda ...shuts down, which means we can't reach it because it doesn't do a lot.

Any statistical data yet?

Also ... is it just me, or is the forum really slow sometimes, especially in the last 2 weeks or so?

I think it's just you ... the forums are as fast as the rest of my internet for me (or that may be just me :P).

To clarify:
The forum usually loads very (!) fast. Once in a while, requests take forever (10-20s?) with nothing happening and then the page loads as quickly as usual. This occurs for a few pages, then it's back to normal again. I experienced this on different ISPs, systems, browsers ... Might still be me, dunno.

Regards, Ts

Not this bad. I remember Mags setting the NWN servers to max priority which kinda strangled the forums. Perhaps the reboot returned it to those settings again.

Me too. I had thought it was just my ISP or my computer, but I guess not.

Bioware pretty much put all their eggs into Windows. I'm not surprised if their Mac version is complete rubbish.

It also doesn't make any sense why'd they even bother. The Linux version runs on OS X anyway, or any POSIX UNIX/Linux OS.

Haven't had any forum issues here either, and I'd likely notice, because my wireless internet IS having issues (constantly losing the connection), so any flakiness unrelated to losing my connection would cause even more frustration than I'm already feeling.

*spends the next 20 minutes cursing about unreliable wireless routers*

I think they are all like that. When I had the wireless router did I get disconnects all the time, things would load, but playing online was impossible.

But yes, it was a few times quite slow for me too, no idea what it was though. And its gone by now.

Or maybe it's based on our geography and of the server?

I don't think it'd be geography, otherwise there'd be a very noticeable difference between the US, Europe and here.

Most likely down to the service provider, or the quality of the router.

Its very very bad. I had to try 3 times just to open this page today, and twice more to actually post this message.

I've never had any problem to that degree, that does sound like something wrong with the server though.
Although my connexion is really bad, it rarely fails to load a page.

The server they are running Amia from (DL145 G2) has Lights Out 100, since it, or iLO, was introduced to most every HP server around October 2002. Not nearly as easy to use as iLO2, but it gets the job done.

I get this problem occassionally as well. Pages just fail to load or take a painfully long time to do so. Nothing helps when that happens to me, just returning later.
