I'm not here to complain about them. I just wanna know their ic explanation?

For instance, how does one rp the nerfing of true sight? You cast it, but you still won't see through sanctuary or hidden critters, and even if you wanted to rp that you can, once they go hostile, there's no way to.

So obviously, there's no way to rp it -isn't- nerfed. But what's the accepted ic explanation for its nerfing?

Would one just say something along the lines of "oh, tosh, that spell hasn't worked on the Isle in ages!"

Magic functions differently on Amia. I'm actually working on some IC theories to explain why this is, so people that don't want to simply ignore that mages can't teleport or fly around or whatever else have a IC reason to sate them.

You, of course, can come up with any reason you want as to why these changes and differences are there. My reasoning is best going to be summed up in the theories as there's simply a magic zone (zone as in related dead zones and wild zones phenomena, but different) around Amia and some of the places it's connected to via leylines (portals) that hampers, distorts, prevents, or otherwise makes difficult some magic.

The way I "explain" spell changes are that they are so everywhere, not just on the isle of Amia, and that they have always been so. It is really the only way anything makes sense.

This can be kind of odd when a new drastic change is made, but I haven't had any problems with this in my few years of off-and-on playing here, so it works.

This is easy. In FR, all magic, except for Shadow Weave magic, is filtered through Mystra's Weave. Now the Weave is not a static entity but a malleable one. It can become ripped, torn, repatched, and so forth. New magic is always created and old magic sometimes degrades becoming lost. Mystra is always trying to safeguard her Weave to prevent mortals from accessing raw magic. Spells changing might be Mystra's doing or fluctuations in the Weave due to abnormalities.

True Seeing was nerfed on Amia about four years ago. I think we're at the point where we can plausibly claim it's always been that way. Which of the half dozen players still around from before then are likely to jump in and disagree?

True seeing is not the only spell thats been changed. There is Greater Sanctuary, Black Blade of Disaster, Isaac's missile storm, Greater Ruin, Hellball, Magic Circle of Protection, Silence, etc. since that time. Here I drew a nifty picture to illustrate how the Weave works as a filter.

*edit* Fixed the map to illustrate how divine magic works as well. This is why Mystra does not refuse magic from the gods (Mystra's Refusal). If she cut them off from using the Weave, all the deity's followers would be cut off from their spells as well.

This is all in the 3.0 campaign setting and Magic of Faerun by the way.

Considering the fact that Faérun (amia) is riddled with epic-anythings, i'm surprised that the weave is still okay and doesn't resemble a scarf that's been used a few decades too long.

Yeah, I had just assumed that the huge density of spell casters on the island had torn the weave and it re-knit oddly, much like scar tissue.

Or as I like to say, "the wizards did it".

Personally, I don't understand why you need to assume magic works "differently" elsewhere. There is no accessible "elsewhere" on the server, nothing the characters can experience during the game. Therefore, I see absolutely no story reason for such an assumption, especially since it will create awkward situations with those who do assume there's nothing special about Amian magic. My wizards know teleportation and flight, for example, they just don't get to use them much on screen.

IronAngel, buddy .. pal..

This server is implied to be in Faerun (yes one that's not likely to go the same road as the one where the SpellPlague occurs) ..

There are characters who come from off the island and who may from time to time leave the island to go elsewhere.

Now that said yes it does mean reasons need to be come up with. *especially considering things like Mythals don't entirely exist in traditional Abeir Toril to my knowledge* .. but still.

Yes, but no historical event of Faerûn has ever been dependant on the exact function of True Sight, it hasn't forged empires or affected cultures. Why do you assume True Sight works different on Faerûn, in the first place?

We are talking about the half-OOC mechanics of the game here, not history or geographics. It's, at best, awkward to try come up with IC explanations to why Magic Weapon has a different duration than if it was cast in Amn, or why many of the most powerful and often-used arcane spells (such as Melf's Acid Sheathe, Greater Sanctuary, Isaac's Greater Missile Storm, Firebrand) on Amia and various other geographically unconnected islands and locations, have never even been heard of elsewhere, and you can't cast them on Faerûn? After all, those spells are no more canon or ICly explained than whatever spell changes we've made.

Sure, you can theorize if you want, but it's by no means necessary for the story. I wager that 95% of the time, it's just clumsy and embarassing.

They use a boat? :D

Anyway, never was a DM in PnP or elsewhere but I assume every game just takes the FR setting as groundwork and then decides how their world works.

I personally go mental if I'd consider Amia to be canon.

No what I mean is that there are characters who do go off island for various reasons, in some cases as well, they are casters for whom their Magic functions more to the setting then Amia's while off.

That said this could open up some large cans of worms.

I don't like the idea of there being an IC explanation for spell nerfs other than they always were that way. I don't think my mage PCs would travel to a place where they would be less effective and then decide to stay there. It's much easier to not worry about tiny details like that and assume that everything is "normal" so that more important RP can be focused on.

Yeah, but you don't see those travels on screen. So you don't see magic working any different elsewhere, and therefore you have no reason to assume it does. In fact, when DM plots take you to areas not usually accessible in the module, magic still works the same as ever. So the island of Amia and other features areas don't have their own special laws governing magic, which would be a notion I find awkward.

But most of the spell changes are for balance reasons. No one says one cannot RP his mage to leave the island with a teleportal spell or something similiar. I don't see any issue at all.

Anyway, the canon FR setting is a guideline, no dogma. Other servers have devcrit and HIPS disabled for balance or whatever reasons. Don't know if they have an IC explanation, but in their world it just does not exist.

Amia changes overrule canon things in "our" gameworld.

I'd not try to "explain" things different on Amia, but accept them as given reality for your PC.

Magic does work differently on Amia in typical process. Without a DM, and their consent and help, any spell which is not part of the NWN mechanic cannot happen. Maybe people RP their portal wands as actually casting Teleport or Gate instead, but if we're applying WYSIWYG to this which seems to be the current trend, then if you cannot do it, you cannot do it; at least not in any normal, typical fashion like casting a NWN spell. I would much prefer an IC excuse for this than the OOC avoidance.

Assuming that the way magic works on Amia is how magic works for the rest of the world denies most historical events, or their details. You could say that it the Weave has changed and it doesn't work that way anymore (avoiding a collective memory retcon or avoidance) but that hardly makes sense either since something that happened "historically" a year ago somewhere else on Faerûn is just sticky with the consistency.

Assmusing the way magic works everywhere else on Faerûn is how it works on Amia works even less, because it simply does not, thanks to the game mechanics.

I think you need to leave it to each person to have their own reasons, if they require them. It's easy enough to just play your mage without worrying about the things they can/can't do. Do what you can with magic, and you're free to RP what you can't do mechanically in the game so long as all parties agree, right?

Portal rods/wands now have an IC function. But I'm sure it'd be fine for someone to RP creating the gates with their own magic, wouldn't it? It makes no difference either way. There's going to be the same outcome. A little portal opens up. The animation even makes it look like you're casting a spell when you open one.

If you want a spell cast like Wish, then of course you'll need a DM to help you out. But for simple things, just go with the RP.

I think it's better to just assume the spells we have now are how it has always been and should be and not worry about creating a whole bunch of IC stuff for people to deal with.

You cannot play a role-playing game and assume what you see is what you get, whether that's the trend or not. Just as well, if you went along with this line of thinking, you'd have to come up with IC reasons as to why you cannot dig a hole in the ground without a DM providing the appropiate PLC, or why your iron rapier never breaks even if you beat it against a rock with your 25 Strength. Those examples may not exactly address the matter at hand, but they're clear evidence against over-using or misunderstanding the role of WYSIWYG in online role-playing. In fact, you do not need a DM to cast PnP spells or perform any other non-standard actions. You simpy need your imagination and some typing, and of course the consent of other players if you're about to use a PnP power against them/in a way that affects others or your relation to others.

Do you honestly believe you can come up with an IC explanation that is more elegant and convenient than the OOC assumption of everything being normal? That there is some mysterious logic behind why you can't step through Gate one moment, and the next moment with a DM online, it's suddenly OK. Or that supposedly only Amia, several unconnected islands and regions around the globe, and a few other planes, affect Hellball in a way that makes it deal positive and negative damage, but when you suddenly end up in the Raurin through the course of a DM event, Hellball and all other spells suddenly work identically to the rest of the server.
Quote:

This is simply false. I can prove it to you. Next time we're both on, I can port your character to any corner of Toril, any plane in the multiverse or any planet in Realmspace. It takes little more than a few descrpitive lines. In each location, you can try your spells and see if they work different than they do on Amia. You will see that, in fact, they're identical. The Faerûn of canon books is not the Faerûn of our setting, even if it is similar.

You can try theorizing, sure. But forgive me if I'm skeptic about anyone creating a convincing IC theory on the matter.

You don't need to create a bunch of IC stuff to deal with nerfed spells. All the explanations you ever need is currently in FR lore anyways. Mystra/Mystryl have been nerfing magic since -339DR Year of Sundered Webs.

I really dislike doing this, but it seems a part of my post was overlooked:

Quote:

Also, yes. I think that a satisfactory-enough IC explanation can be devised. Maybe not to sate everyone, but it makes me happy and it's what my character believes, wrong or not. It doesn't have to be a perfect answer. Even in core, there's rarely perfect answers that account to absolutely everything because lore contradicts, there've been different writers and developers with different ideas, sometimes the actual truth of the matter isn't given amidst the variations of a story, or mythos, or event.

OOC assumptions of it being normal aren't elegant in any way for me with something like this. I'm not saying everyone prefers an IC explanation instead, or that they are better or worse for it. I'm saying it's an option.

The bit you quoted is untrue, though. You can teleport all you want, as long as it doesn't affect others in any unfair way. You don't need to ask a DM for it. If I was describing a mage duel in a forum post, they would likely be flying and tossing PnP spells aplenty. Last time I played Kalliniel, he cast a levitation spell to get him down a cliff (via a transition). I didn't ask a DM, and you can't argue I did it because I'm one, because at that moment I was in the role of a player.

I guess I don't mind you doing what you feel is the best solution, but I can't help but to wonder if your character won't be regarded insane when she lectures about why teleportation doesn't work on Amia or why True Seeing sees mundane sneaks in Cormyr, and other characters go on merrily teleporting around in PC Story and travelling to Cormyr to see their True Seeing working exactly like it does in Amia. Theories might be well and dandy, but they're rarely succesful if empiric evidence contradicts them.

So I can say I'm casting Teleport and then walk to the other side of the map, or Portal Wand there. But I cannot, actually Teleport there. The closest I could get to "true teleportation" is a DM moving me to location.

Anyway, the theory deals with discrepancies like that.

Right here is really the beauty of mage RP in my opinion. One person's theory can be contradicted by another only to be proven wrong by another's understanding. This is why magedueling is such a time honored tradition amongst the magical community. The study of arcane magic is constantly a struggle of "My staff is bigger than yours!".

(In reply to Letum) In Character, of course, there would be no difference. Your character would not know a DM used the "Port to DM" option or that in fact you moved the model on the screen manually. That's sort of the point of role-playing, isn't it? Similarly, you can only say you cast Fireball, when in fact there is only a bunch of orange-coloured pixels and a script that trigger simultaneously, and no three-dimensional ball shapes or actual fire involved. Truthfully, I don't see your point.

My point is basically, with abbreviation, that without a DM that PnP spells that cannot be simulated in some other way are not really easy to pull off, to the point of being impossible or awkward.

Saying you cast Dimension Door to clear the distance down a cliff, and then mechanically running it is one thing; more spectacular things require a DM to help out, or the odd suspension of, "I would cast this tremendous horrible spell on you, but since it doesn't exist in NWN, I conveniently forgot to memorise it again/used it for the day because it's actually a PnP spells that I have no mechanical way to express, or suitable alternative to cast as this spell." Or something along those lines.

But really, it boils down to if a DM cannot assist, it can't really be done - and this means it cannot be regularly done, and it is my preference to think of a IC reason for this, than to more constantly have to ignore it entirely because of OOC impediment. That some players may choose to ignore this "problem" entirely, making it seem odd my character addresses it doesn't rather bother me, nor do I think it necessarily is contradictory - hey, maybe she is crazy, after all. By the same token, it also doesn't conflict with more liberal use of PnP spells in forum-side stories, where mechanics aren't an issue at all.

I favor IC impediment far more, which could be used to argue against me that the character in question, indeed, just never has that spell available, that they've conveniently used it up each time it becomes relevant, but that's a rather cyclic argument anyway, because there are scrolls, there's pre-planning, there's all sorts of extenuating circumstances as to why that IC explanation ends up being purely OOC anyway, and awkward.

Once gain, Iron refuses Occam's Razor.

Magic in our Realm functions this way everywhere, and always has. "Amian spell Changes" are in fact universal, and as my evidence to this, I show to you KHem, a region in Mulhorand and very near Thay. If magic operated different in Amia (and ergo Khem) than in Mulhorand, Something Bad Would Go Down. But it does not, because all magic in our FR functions as "Amia-changed."

Frozenfar. Underdark. Brogendenstein. Ruathym.

Magic simply works "That Way" in our Forgotten Realms... and I think that Iron's belief that magic functioning different here has absolutely no effect on the IC of the server, to be the biggest sack of crap I have read in this topic. It makes little sense, to no sense whatsoever. Just because it happens offscreen doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

EDIT: Wait. Is Iron agreeing with me? I think I'm aruging with Iron against Letum here. I'm not sure. Sorry.

The theory offers an explanation as to why "That Way" affects Khem, despite it being a billion miles away on the mainland, also. Or, any place that becomes connected to Amia. The only wrench would come in the form of a place that someone boated to, and Portal Wands didn't allow porting into or out of.

I'm not arguing what the OOC truth is, mind you.

I'm not certain what the ground are for an IC theory wheen there's no IC to the theory, though? Your PC would be making up a theory based on... um... imagined observations of the Weave doing nothing like it's explained it's doing... or something?

''That Way'' is the way it is, and the way we all know it IC. The whole point is that the changes are OOC, and so should have no bearing on the IC magic.
Amia, and all the areas included in it, Khem, everything, are all part of the same world. The world was based on Faerun, but has slightly different magic.

So the theory of magic being weird in different parts of the world doesn't really work IC. Because IC you wouldn't notice the difference... because it's all just 'That Way' anyway. Right?

I had a character that tried working it out, eventually she decided "These spells don't work properly on this isle, and others don't work as all."
No logical explanation presented itself, so i was just something to do with the Weave not working properly.

Tormak, you are indeed agreeing with me. :D I didn't realize my posts are that confusing. >_>

Having actually read the rest of this topic, Tormak's rendition of Occam's Razor is the most simple (funnily enough) and the most readily acceptable - suspension of disbelief works easily enough on it, and isn't strained by the "why don't these spells work like ... ?" questions.

Or am I misunderstanding you?

Your IC theory would be an IC explanation to a deviation from a norm (how magic 'normally' works) that doesn't exist (Amia spell changes pertain to the setting/server, not the island/geography), and so wouldn't make sense.

The paradox of historical events is just one of many paradoxes you have to endure as a player, IMO.

Would've been nice to know this was the universal ruling before the RP. Alright, don't worry there won't be any more from me.

I guess it's something nobody thought of defining further, because the standard is that changes made by the DM affect the whole campaign and any irregularities will be mentioned separately.

Our "campaign" includes the whole of Forgotten Realms, even if you can't access every corner of it.

Unavailable spells don't need some intricate explanation beyond "I have never heard of such a spell and never seen a scroll from which I could have learned it".

The whole concept of doing damage is OOC to begin with. Who cares if you're doing 10d6 Negative and 10d6 Positive? IC you are hurting, injuring or killing something, not doing such-and-such dX of damage. IC you wouldn't know the difference.

If you really want to get down to it, claiming that your spell works differently on Amia than it does in Cormyr is kind of metagaming.

"Who's Zed?"
"Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead."

I dispute that. Negative sucks life out and Positive puts too much in. I would guess Neg would make the surrounding tissue dead and numb and Pos would make it hypersensitive.

Which gives rise to the delicious irony that Salandrans really would be best off using Neg damage on their weapons, when fighting the living and trying to be humane.
