I'd absolutely love to do that, or make going above 20 request only and very difficult to acheive, but I think both of us would get lynched. :p
Sadly it's just not feasible on this server. Everything is balanced to account for level 30. And I agree that it isnt at all the players' faults for using what they have access to and are encouraged to use via the influence of DM plots and the setting.
That's why I don't think giving PCs access to even higher magic is a good idea.

That's why I don't think giving PCs access to even higher magic is a good idea. I understand, although if restarting the server is ever brought up I really hope a level cap of 20 is considered (and hey, let's face it - some of the best fantasy/sci-fi is set in a world where the 'modern' characters live in the shadows of the ancients and their magic/technology). That being said, if the goal here is to basically treat level 30 as if it was level 20 (or even level 15 from how you guys handle even 9th level spells), it may be more feasible to move even further away from the setting and actively disallow certain magic that you can't hope to account for in plots when there are so many players and you give them so much down time to recharge their powers. Amia is already pretty far from what Faerun is supposed to be and it seems like the majority are perfectly happy to completely disregard healing magic and divination, for starters. If you don't like the setting, then divorce yourself from it officially by banning what's giving you trouble.

That's just an awful idea, I am sorry. The setting is what it is, and a drastic change like that would neuter the server. There's no reason the suddenly (or progressively) have everyone dumbed down in power. I mentioned it before: we are level 30s, not glorified level 20s. Things are scaled up. And if you want to say that supports your argument, then a 20 cap server is a glorified 15 or 10 server.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, since this thread is entirely about the general consensus of not permitting level 30 D&D characters to have epic ritual magic. If you'd like, I could go through the forums and find hundreds of references to how the high magic setting of Faerun has been averted in Amian lore. I am not saying Amians haven't done epic things with epic magic before. But you are kidding yourself if you think what it means to be a level 30 on this server is anywhere close to what a level 30 tabletop character could do. I don't need to convince you, thankfully, it's already the case. I just think we could do well not to delude ourselves further.

Resetting the server would make me sick to my stomach, but only because all the work I put in thus far would be flushed on a reset button. Not IC work, I mean design stuff. But my nausea would be a small price to pay for the overall happiness of the players.

What I'm proposing is just a considerable amount of paperwork and rebuilds to convert peoples' characters from 30 to 20, but once it was done I think most people would be surprised at how little had changed in regard to their influence and agency. But yeah, way too much work to do for free, as Alanna mentioned.

LOL, how did discussing Elven High Magic make people want to talk about player-wiping the server?

I only skimmed.
There is nothing in High Magic that we cant do IC with normal magic and enough RP + support. Sink the island? We could do it. Make the island fly? We could do it. Create a powerful magical ward crystal that casts a net over the whole island to protect us from dirty stinky drow? We could do it.
I love the idea of High Magic, but alas i think it's better left as a sideline thing, spoke of for example and such. What i've always liked most about High Magic is the ability for the mage to cast something so utterly taxing, it actually kills them. Using their life to open a portal to call a Celestial Host to aid their city in a time of need. I remember one story about a High Mage using High Magic to cause it to rain, i guess she did this a few times and it ended up killing her. Which i've always thought was silly because Change Weather is like a.. 3rd level spell? Anyways. Love the self sacrifice idea.
