Do illithids have vocal chords or do they only communicate through telepathy?

They can communicate verbally, yes. Through other means than telepathy I mean!

It should also be noted, for others who were curious-- that a shifter in Illithid form cannot use the telepathy that Illithid's often do.

And while it's certainly possible that Illithids speak in a "mundane" fashion like vocal chords, they certainly prefer to use their telepathy (for various reasons) and in most cases would be likely to be resistant to speaking verbally versus telepathically.
