Hey guys! Im having an issue with crashing on Amia. It happens at random times and it doesn't really matter where im at on Amia, my game just freezes and I have to bring up the task manager to shut it down. It doesn't ever seem to unfreeze after waiting. It isn't lag either. I can't move my mouse pointer or anything on the game. It also doesn't matter what resolution or graphic settings I have on (though I haven't messed with the advanced settings much). It doesn't freeze THAT often but I would say atleast 2-3 times for every 4 hours I play at one time.

Im running a somewhat newer model laptop and im boasting big time when I say the specs:
CPU: intel core i7
NVIDIA geforce gtx 660m
ddrIII 8gb
running windows 7 home

I will also note that im running on administrator (wont let me play without it) off of a shortcut from the GOG.com folder. Im pretty sure my pc sets the proper settings when I begin playing the game too, but im not sure. I will also note that this is the 3rd time downloading the game because of corrupted files and the only overrides I have is the portraits and the amia recommended optional overrides on the website.

I would appreciate any help on this guys. It sucks so hard when im killing stuff and my game freezes and I come back on and im dead.

Not too sure if there is a remedy for it, NWN just doesn't seem to like Windows 7, I had the same problem on my Laptop when playing Amia which also had Win7.

If you have an unstable Internet connection, the game use to hang. At least it did for me. I didn't realize the problem first until I ran the task manager in the background where it also showed the graph over network use on the network card. Then, I saw that whenever the Internet connection had a dip, the game froze. Since it happens several times in one night and not at all another night, the problem was hard to find. Youtube just get a hickup when the connection dips, but NWN freeze. After I moved to another place, the problem went away so it was quite obvious that the problem was connected to Internet and not to NWN..

I don't say that it's your problem, I say that was a problem for me.

Windowed mode helped a bit, but it still inevitably crashed unfortunately, it did seem to make time between crashes a bit longer but I couldn't really state that for certain.

usually when I have a dip in the internet, I can still move my guy around and such but everything else froze up. This is like a graphic issue I think or something to do with the client

On the bright side, it can't just be that it's Windows 7. I'm currently running Windows 7 and I haven't crashed at all in months. And I've had 10-hour and longer sessions in-game!

I know that doesn't really help you, but at least you know it's not "Windows 7 doesn't like NWN and will crash no matter what."

That said, I used to have a problem very similar to what you're describing. I don't know why it happened or even why it stopped happening. But it's been months since the last time, so I didn't bother looking into it further. xD

Disable visual themes and desktop composition (under the Compatibility tab on nwmain.exe properties). It will kill Aero while NWN is running, but it should help.

If none of the above works, try re-installing nwn. I had the same problem, but after reinstalling.... I barely ever crash, and when I do crash, my computer isn't stuck in some strange loop that makes it take forever to get back to normal function.

When it crashes can you do the following
-take a screenshot of any error messages
-Go to "Administrator Tools" + "Event viewer" and check if there's any recent errors under the applications tab
-Copy amd pste it here

Could be your video drivers. You could roll back your drivers, but that may impact other games you may play.

I have this problem, I just lower graphic settings aallll the way down and really baby my game... i.e don't change camera angles too fast, don't constantly tab-highlight everything anymore, that's what makes me crash the most I find, the game trying to turn around and update everything that's in your view.

I dont think its my video drivers. I can play any other game A-OK.

I might have to baby this game. Though I pvp alot, it would take some getting used to.

This is what I got from the event viewer.. hopefully this helps. This is the report that JUST now happened. Note that this is after I shut off themes on my computer, ran in administrator, dumbed down the graphics and resolution.

Okay, that seems alright can work off that. What i'm going to ask you is to do a couple of things.

Firstly, I want you to install the below patch found in the link (And another else who wants to)
http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Ot ... il&id=1513
This will move your current overrides to overrides_bak or something similiar, you just need to copy them back over to the overrides folder

Secondly, you can put all the settings as they were before, standard res for yourself and such and set the program's comparability to work with XP

Thirdly, you Need to create a batch file with the following commands inside it
@echo off
net stop "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager"
net start "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager"

To do this (if you're not sure)
Open up Notepad
Copy and Paste the above into it
Click Save As
Change the "Save as Type" to all files
Save as NWN Fix.bat (or anything you truly want)

Now!!

The Easy bit..

Run NWN under Admin mode, wait for it to get to the normal ingame menu, run the NWN fix.bat as administrator and see if it crashes again. Good Luck.. Hope it works.. If not.. I've got another few tricks up m'sleeve

Okay I did as you asked, CautiousDread. thank you so much for the help.

Now do I run that batch file AFTER nwn has already started?

And also, what does the batch file do exactly?

Batch file is run by basically double clicking it as normal, in this case right click it and select Admin

Batch files basically, are a set of CMD prompt commands that run in an order, saves you typing them out.
Say you wanna check your IP address out, you type ipconfig /all
Then want to renew your IP lease you type ipconfig /renew

If you can't be bothered to type that all in one go, you basically create a batch file with the two commands in order and then run it and it should run the two commands as asked.

Did it work? Cause I'm crashing like once in an hour and I'm looking for any solution:/
I'm using NVIDIA and Win7 too.

I had problems with NWN too, I had to download the 1.69 Critical patch! Update my video card because it was a AMD A6 Radeon, & I also had to run it under XP SP3, and mine was a GOG game too!

I also found turning down my graphics setting and disabling shiny water helped immensely!

Hope this helps.
