Hello - am new here and wanted to ask how the death system works (besides what I read about the raise dead scrolls/spells, resurrection, etc. I'm more curious about if you're adventuring alone and you die - do you have the ability to respawn with xp and gp loss or do you go to the fugue and pray to a deity (what if you don't have one) or wait until something magical happens? Thanks and sorry for the dumb question! So many servers are so different and I couldn't find this answer anywhere on the forums (unless I completely missed it) ~ The Licker of Squid!

Dying's fun. You should try it once or twice.
There's an xp and gold loss and a fugue that you go to. Though, exiting the fugue is not so difficult.

Yeah, pretty much it goes:
First death you get sent to an awesome little area with a cool NPC and you get no penalty. I suggest you read the description on the NPC. If you don't, I will harm you (j/k, but it's touching and I love reading it)
Every other death gets a penalty (100 xp per level and 10% of your gold, the latter hurts more haha) and you are sent to Fugue and them can respawn into the world.
Of course, when you are with someone they can raise you without cost to yourself or them (True Resurrection, though, is a different matter and is a DM supervised spell since it's PnP) The only time it's really different is in PvP, when they can bring you back.

Your character doesn't know it went to the fugue plane does it? All you remember is something horrible happening to you just before you die then waking up where ever with a headache. Is that correct?

Ozelotl wrote: Your character doesn't know it went to the fugue plane does it? All you remember is something horrible happening to you just before you die then waking up where ever with a headache. Is that correct? Yes and no. You are responsible for how and what your character sees of the world. If it is dynamic and moves the characters story along, then remembering the Fugue is reasonable. The caveat however is that the loss of memory upon death is to curb a player having an IC reason to go kill the other player who just killed them 5 seconds ago. With that in mind, anything within several minutes of death would be considered OOC information and using it to satisfy an IC reason for PvP is against the rules. For example, the paladin has an argument with an orc, they fight and the paladin is killed. He cannot then use any of the events of the actual fight to then claim IC provocation for PvP round 2, when he gets resurrected by a passerby minutes later. He might be able to piece things together, but without witnesses it would be at best a hunch and at best falls into the shady area of having a horde of friends show up right after a fight because they "just happened by". On the flip side, a character that is picking daisy's in the forest can remember picking flowers right up to the instant of death. He or she may be confused about waking up in the Fugue, but if there is a way to use that information against another character it is ruled off limits and part of the hazy memories of being dead. The DM's are not babysitters, and this particular rule regarding character death is to prevent endless revenge PvP, not to limit your ability to RP your character. Simply take it upon yourself to differentiate between reasonable IC information within the rules and what is considered OOC that you cannot act upon and you'll be fine.

No, PCs do not remember anything about the fugue plane. Nor do they remember the deity of the one who raised them, if applicable. No exceptions there.

No exceptions, got it. Do they still get to choose to not be raised by a deity not their own even if they don't remember?
...I do find it sad that our RP server needs such a concrete rule though...

You are correct. Basically it's like this:
Your PC remembers absolutely nothing that occurred while dead. However, when someone tries to raise you (PvP or even when killed by monsters) you have the option to ask for the raising PC's alignment and deity and you can say no to the raise. Or, even, you can just say no to the raise, too.
That's how I was explained it.

I'm pretty sure that the forgetting-fugue is a Forgotten Realms rule, not a special Amia rule.
When raised, your PC is informed the name, alignment and deity of the raiser. They do not get to remember any of this information post-res. Also strictly speaking that's the only information your character gets, but since most of the time you'd accept anyway this doesn't come up (but if you get raised by your friend, and your friend is secretly evil, you might have good reason to refuse. Just don't metagame that knowledge later).
Your post was right about it being optional to remember everything up to death, though. Not sure about the "You're not allowed to use the fact that your character was just killed by x as a pretext to kill x" though. Didn't see anything on the PvP rules about it except technicality 11 which doesn't seem the same thing. Endless revenge PvP isn't explicitly forbidden, though it might cross the "You must give an out!" rule. It seems to be generally considered polite not to engage in endless revenge PvP though, especially right after you've been killed (and there's an argument that it's realistic that the trauma would damage your memory - I don't buy that personally, but I'm not personally inclined towards endless PvP revenge anyway). So yes if someone kills you to your face with very short (but rules-legal) warning, you're permitted to remember. Though if you don't see the killer at all... you can't remember information you never had.
As far as I know. I might be wrong.

this is how i do it
whenever im about to raise someone new, i pm them asking if their character would accept a raise from X diety and alignment.
when i die, i always just obey the no PVP backsies rule, where you cant use what just happened to pvp them back. i dont remember the fugue, and keep pretty vague rules about timing memory loss. for the most part it doesnt come up and ill go so far as to say i remember everything... except that someone killed me. in pvm its easier to fudge because no one is going to get upset if you wake back up and take vengeance on the closest monster.

You die, you get a free resurrection.
You die again, you don't.
As for raising characters, I either do or don't depending on character. If I feel I've got time to roleplay with Zes I'd prefer to raise them and make them pay for it or praise Beshaba for her good will in returning them to life, with Xyme I raise only those who show themselves worthy (by Xyme's standards) and with Catkin I raise pretty much anyone who's friendly and just ask them not to die again, Ririk.

What's he trying to start? All I see is a player asking for confirmation of a rule and his opinion on such a rule being needed, he's not saying it should/or shouldn't be there.

Yes, precisely.
And since Tormak didn't read the other DM's response, that it is in fact a concrete rule on the server, I'm a little confused as "No Exceptions" leaves little doubt. And maybe it's catching as there is no reference to remembering anything between dying and resurrection in either the PHB or DMG. Unless it's an inferred application of an unstated rule, which makes it misleading and disingenuous.

The Fugue is Forgotten Realms specific and PHB/DMG are Core/Greyhawk. It might be mentioned in FRCS or something, will check when I get an opportunity (read: someone will post the answer before I get a chance to).

I am not sure how you interpreted it differently. And that it is not a "concrete rule" on Amia in the sense that you explain it, because it is simply how DnD works.

I believe she is referring to people dying, coming back, and going 'HEY YOU KILLED ME RAWR'.
Because I mean, seriously people, unless you got into a drawn out argument I really doubt you are going to instantly recall every detail that happened before you were killed. It counterbalances the fact that no one ever really dies without DM intervention, you know?
The only reason my characters that have died know who killed them is because the first incident involved an argument and there was a group she was with, and the other my mage and his two companions had several minutes of discussion with their killers before the fight went down.
So, yeah, it just makes things more sane for the sake of RP.

Can I suggest enforcing a brief delay, 5 seconds would do, before you can respawn after dying?
This would prevent misclicks when you die in the heat of battle.

Not even just the whole revenge thing, just imagine you say something secretive in front of a spy, then you kill the spy, for whatever reason. Then the spy tommorow tells all his friends what he heard, despite having been killed immediately after hearing it.
It's just very godgamey, and stupid, and unfortunately, the story of how people get exposed sometimes. :/
I've always thought that dying should mean that you can't remember the events that directly led up to your death. No matter what capacity. Ignorance is bliss, I guess. But eh, well, it is what it is. It would help evil players who try to do evil things in subtlety greatly, for what it's worth.
I mean, hell, things like assassination is just a one way ticket to being outted, and in any normal setting, it wouldn't be.
