I face a recurring issue in which my game outright stalls and then crashes repeatedly in certain areas. Under most circumstances, the game runs perfectly well, but in Ruathym: Fortress Wiltun and Kohlingen: Greengarden District particularly, my computer very much falls into an inconsolable rage (I crashed in the latter area 3 times within 30 minutes alone today). My leading theory is that it has something to do with the new tilesets being used, but if that were the case, surely there would be issues accessing the server as well, or in other areas?
I attempted to fix the problem by reducing my graphics settings to mediocre 2001-lite, but this didn't help. I have no problems in logging back in to the server immediately thereafter, but needless to say, being kicked out for going into certain areas (especially ones I now frequent) is disconcerting.
The closest example I can conjure in regard to what I am experiencing is the brief lag spike when the game renders a large group of players, except it happens in empty areas and instead of coming back to normal speed, the game ceases to respond. Hasty use of keyboard commands (arrow keys to turn the screen, WASD movement, etc.) seems to make the crashes slightly more frequent, but I haven't tested this exhaustively.

It is likely the amount of PLCs or NPCs (especially in Kohlingen). Wiltun recently had a face lift and is using the time tile set but has significantly more PLCs now, so it might be one of those, or a combination of all them. Not certain, but this is something that has been an issue for others, too.

You can attempt the troubleshooting fixes listed: here. But it's worth repeating that you should probably have anti-aliasing, number of dynamic lights and shadow casting lights turned down to minimum to reduce crashing.

And false response.
The myriad changes to the way my computer runs the game did absolutely nothing. And, in fact, now I'm actually beginning to crash in areas where there are no new textures (the She'kat caverns) simply by expedient of my game trying and failing to load PCs. If I lose sight of a creature (for example, a party member) and I have to reload them, the game stalls out. It happened 3 more times within 15 minutes when I was hunting and at this point I can't actually play the game because when I try, it just crashes, apparently now regardless of where I am and what I'm doing.
I'll return to this topic and try a few other options when I'm less frustrated.

It's an old game, running on an engine that uses deprecated OGL functions so the compatibility is a mess. Unfortunately the only way to make it work is to prod it until finding a solution that works for you.
Another thought that I have is checking your current graphics driver version and either updating to the latest, or googling what's the latest stable for NWN, and if possible, downgrading back to it. This will negatively influence any other, newer games you're playing.

Those two areas are murderous on computers because they push the game to its absolute limit, Greengarden esepcially. I actually can't teleport into Greengarden as a DM. I have to teleport to Tristram's path south of it, then zone into Greengarden and walk VERY SLOWLY north.
What I found helpful was to zoom in closer to my character in those areas. The problem seemed to be tied with specific PLCs or objects, at certain camera angles, and keeping it zoomed in minimizes the time or the ability for that particular combination to pop up on the monitor. Especially in the Greengarden District - it seems to be a problem with the walls right around the gates, or something similar.
Like Letum said, I have a feeling it's due to the overabundance of "stuff" in the area. Greengarden is especially heinous with this: A hak-made and therefore high poly tileset mixed with a LOT of PLCs and a LOT of NPCs.
Your problem is shared by more than a few people I talk to or see in Party Chat, unfortunately I don't got an easy fix, and share a lot of your annoyance. I basically can't DM in the Kohl outskirts because of it.
