If any one has questions about this character or how they work or want to clarify something with me his creator feel free to post here.

This is my Method!

First lets take our initial idea and run it through a Mary sue Litmus test.
Quote:
Matthew

Matthew is nothing like you. He isn't really very cool: he blends into crowds, he hangs out on the fringes at parties, and wearing shades after dark makes him run into things. There's never been anything special about him that he could see; boy, is he in for a surprise. He's come in for his share of hurt, but gotten off with minor damage. And he's gotten no slack from you.

In general, you care deeply about Matthew, but you're smart enough to let him stand on his own, without burdening him with your personal fantasies or propping him up with idealization and over-dramatization. Matthew is a healthy character with a promising career ahead of him.

Score Breakdown
Mirror, Mirror: Do I Know This Guy? 2
Beware the Monks of Cool: You Mean Plaid Is Out? 6
'Tis Your Destiny: Plain Joe 3
Oh, the Trauma: Can't Complain 6
Momma Loves Me Best: Momma HATES Him! 0
Total: 17

If you do not want to know supper huge spoilers about the character Matthew Of Valendale, then please DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER.

I am making this thread because I have come to notice that communication and discussion of a very characters grounding foundations is sparse unless players and spectators alike take a decent amount of time to understand the character. I am very much a fan of characters that are three dimensional and have depth and believability.

Back Ground!
Matthew's Background

I believe background helps shape why a character acts the way they do. So let's start with the basics of understanding Matthew by taking a look back in to his background. I don't know if any one has really picked up the subtle hints in the aforementioned thread. But: SPOILER WARNING HERE!
Matthew's Mother was a Prostitute who could not take care of and provide for her son.
So as a method of ensuring her child's safety and future, she decided to give him up to a man known as Lance Valendale. Which is where the 'Of Valendale' house name comes from. Lance was a Purple Dragon Knight who served in Cormyr. Thussly Matthew had a strange sort of Childhood where he essentially lost his mother form a young age and gained a rather strict and demanding father figure in place along with a new life style that had a very clear cut chain of command that he was at the bottom of. Now Lance isn't the best Father figure as his methods are harsh and strict and if Matthew messed up he paid dearly. Let's take a moment and step back and think about what might happen to a character in this situation here.

Matthew's 'Troupe' List;

Now in The House of Valendale 1.4, we get to see the beginnings of one of the troupes and see the character's guilt start to build. One of Matthew's greatest weaknesses and strengths is this troupe. Matthew may not physically get hurt very often or show it in the 'normal way' but he has an over active Jimminy Cricket, and suffers constant extreme guilt, severe depression, and displays self deprecating sense of self. Matthew however has had it quite literally beaten in to him that he needs to keep face in almost anything. He's one of those guys who suffers from thinking crying is a weakness. And yet, he's the type of guy to tell you it's not a weakness. He tries hard not to let his emotions show through or to voice opinions in a public manner. Essentially he's never been aloud to. Because of this Matthew seems to come off as an inhibited, repressed, or excessively conventional person.

And for some pretty obvious reason Matthew is Celebate and can partially be considered to fall in to the ; CelibateHero Matthew also rarely ever curses and reprimands those that do. He doesn't drink and is often at the beck and call of his shoulder angel quite often.

More to come!

I'm all about in depth characterization, and would totally like to see more of these (and/or see more people doing in depth work on their characters that isn't shown publicly). I do these sorts of breakdowns for my characters, but get really frustrated when the barest hint of any of it gets any 'real' mileage in game. It's still good, for myself at least, to have done it, but I don't seem to make interesting enough characters for anyone to even begin to dig into their depths and I'm admittedly poor at just flaunting it.

But I have no idea what that score breakdown is or where it comes from. Source me?

(I've said it before, and I'll say it again I'm sure: tvtropes.org is an awesome character building resource. Use it people!)
