As many knows my only character, Earalenia, is a ranger of Eilistraee. While she is a ranger I don't feel like she is much of a ranger, and usually feel like just another Eilistraeen, so I am asking what makes a ranger different from other mundane followers? any advice is welcome. Thing is I want Earalenia to feel more nature oriented while still being an Eilistraeen.

// PS. hope this is the right forum for this? if not, I am sorry

Problem is in third ed, they neutered all that and made the ranger weird and boring. Now it's just "guy who hates some races and somehow, gets divine spells for some reason."

Part of Eilistraee's dogma is "Befriend strangers, shelter those without homes, and feed the hungry." As a ranger, Earalenia would probably be able to keep track of where various prey animals/packs roam, and would be able to pass that information along to those who would need it. Barring that, she could hunt the animals, herself, and supply the meat (and other items) to those in need. She could even teach them how to hunt those animals, themselves.

Befriending strangers could include something as simple as being a guide to lost travelers, or those new to Amia. Warn them of dangerous areas, and guide them toward the safer paths to travel about the lands, and such. If they don't have a place to stay, welcome them to spend some time at the Shrine. Or maybe take some of the animal furs (from hunting) and show them how to use them to construct a temporary shelter.

As per the "Repay violence with swift violence so that those who cause it are quickly dealt with" part of the dogma, you could apply this to poachers, as well. Since part of the dogma is to feed the hungry, the senseless slaughter of animals could be seen as an affront to Eilistraee, as the meat from the animals usually goes to waste when they're poached for their skins (or other parts).

That's my two cents, anyway. Hope it helps.

I think, in my experience, Earalenia fits most of the things babycakes has said anyway!

A ranger is a protector of nature, and revels in the song of the land. Going out for weeks at a time, running through the forest racing a wolf for the fun of it... sleeping in the highest branches of a tree to feel the wind blow.

When it comes to protecting... they wont hesitate to put an arrow through the eyeball of someone hunting an animal for sport... or cutting down trees to clear the way for civilizations progress... Hunting for food is something they understand as a cycle of life. Their concern is nature... and the cycle that nature has, keeping it balanced so it may continue.

These are my opinions, for I play a ranger of Mielikki PnP style, and have always thought of it this way. For a good reference on what a ranger is... the book sojourn by ra salvatore can be a good referrence. The character mooshie is a ranger, and he teaches drizzt. So if you are struggling with being a ranger... maybe read that for guidance or whatever.

Babycakes echoes my thoughts: always take the dogma as your starting point, and see how you can fulfill it.

I don't think ranger necessarily cares about nature so much as she deals with it. She can survive in nature, she knows how the world works, and can fight against it if necessary. Sure, the typical ranger probably is more of a protector like Sithaelon described, but that's not a prerequisite of the class itself. Eilistraee is not a nature deity, so I don't think you should concern yourself so much with how you can serve nature. Rather, look at the ranger's kit and her special strengths, and try to see what makes them suited to serve Eilistraee specifically.

Agreed.

You have to also take into consideration, that Earalenia is a ranger of the druid's Grove.
In my opinion, Earalenia is a fine ranger, though she's been slacking a bit lately, due to personal issues.
Though I would like see her use her ranger abilities for the Shrine more (excellent suggestions posted above), she spends time in the forest and aids Oakmist. Don't overthink her :)
