Hi I just had a question on a possible RP conflict with some jobs and his class/deity. I play a Wood Elf Ranger who worships Mielikki. Would it be poor form to cut down trees as a Lumberjack and convert them to paper as a Miller? Cheers! McGondy |

Elves have to be getting their paper from somewhere. I'd suggest maybe RPing it not as cutting down live healthy trees for their wood, but rather collecting deadfall, harvesting from unsalvageably ailing trees, taking up the castoff trimmings and prunings that come from the routine maintenance of the forests, stuff like that. The lumberjack job doesn't necessarily have to involve hacksaws and plundering. |

Just be responsible about it, as any lumberjack with half a brain would be. Cut some here, some there, ensure that stuff grow back. |

Kind of already been answered, but I'd still like to throw my two cents in. Yeah, a Wood Elf Lumberjack works, even as a servant of Mielikki. Even cutting down healthy, living trees works fine - they're trees, they don't have minds, nerves, pain, or feelings. The Elves make nearly everything out of wood and you can be damn sure it isn't old rotted wood. It's very possible to be a lumberjack and still be a respectful conservationist. Elves and Rangers also aren't obligated to be vegetarians, they're more than capable of killing animals - and not just the old, weak, sick deer. Nature isn't some friendly hippie place, natural is brutal savagery, survival of the fittest. Druids that get up in arms about normal everyday hunters and woodcutters are nonsensical. |

I share Corsair's point of view. As long as it is done with moderation, I don't see any problem with chopping trees. Or even killing a few animals for meals, pelts. It's already part of nature... Beavers build their homes out of trees, carnivores hunt and eat animals. Humanoids are just another animal, except it is supposedly the most intelligent one. It is part of the same cycle as the others. |

Yeah, I assumed that would be the case (bows, floors of the tree-houses e.t.c.). I just didn't want to be wrong and upset/offend characters |

Totally true! But it's also completely valid to discuss what the mainstream view is on whatever question, you know? Maybe someone wants to play a traditionalist; maybe someone is attracted to the idea of rebelliousness but doesn't have enough lore mojo in a particular area to know what would or wouldn't constitute rebellion. Friendly discussion = worthy. |

Friendly discussion = worthy. This is the reason I bring it up, I have little to go on in the way of lore. First toon is an an observer and student |

McGondy wrote: Tree Question Hey there, i spot another tree question i may be able to impart knowledge on again. Yes, morally it is right, just don't be wasteful with resources. Now to the fun part, Trees. You can commit to coppicing. It is tree friendly and you cut the whole thing down. By selecting the type of tree that reacts well, find the healthiest tree you can (Sweet chestnut, Ash, sycamore (The weed that it is) are all good contenders for that as most broad leaves are) And cut it down. Literally that is all that is needed, The tree don't care if you cut it in say spring time. It will survive, store energy in the roots and grow back in lots of off shoots. It extends the tree's life actually, you can't get more hippy than that. The tree will also grow back with multiple offshoots which will grow straighter, because they are competing with each other for light. Wait about twenty years and cut ti down again, for quite a few straight bits of timber. Coppicing was used way back in our time, to help build ships and you can see it still used in the forestry sector. Other than that, selective pruning of branches is another common practice for gaining supplies of wood, though the timber won't really be carpentry graded as the timber won't be thick. Hope that helped from someone who works in the tree sector of life. (Gosh i'd make a awesome druid) |
