Seems to me there's an actual prestige class or some such for these in FR. Anyone know if this is so or if I'm just going crazy? And if such a thing does exist, and sources would be most welcome please.

dungeon master's guide, but it's pretty vague. I'll look through my stash and see if there's anything more.

All i know is a death knight is a warrior cursed with undeath usually by a god, and they are bound to a specific location.
Lord Soth is probably the most famous Death Knight

Death Knight was a template, one that was so broken letting a PC have it was kinda unwise. Death Knights are among the top end nasty undead things in the world, inspired by the ultra bad-ass that was the Dragonlance, and later Ravenloft settings, Lord Soth.
Its nastier then a lich and considerably more difficult to become. Either you have to betray or anger a god in some huge epic way to get cursed, like letting personal jealousy keep you from stopping a world wide cataclysm, or be ultra favored by a dark god. At least that's how its described more or less in the books.

Not really true outside Dragonlance lore. In standard DnD Death Knights are basically the fighter/blackguard version of liches. Still powerful but not spellcaster,s tended towards melee rather than magic. That said, if in life adeath knight could cast magic, it still can as undead.
Lich is a far more powerful template.

Well Lich is in ways due to the arcane requirements, I dunno maybe its my experience with death knights and the powers the template grants in 3.5 that makes them feel more broken and powerful in play.

Lich gives you conditional immortality, immunity to 2 elements, a high turn resistance a paralyzing touch, stat boosts and more.
Death Knight gives you stat boosts and immunity to turning, the same elemental resists and pretty high SR.
They're pretty comparable but I'd take immunity to true death as long as your pretty box is around, vs. unable to be turned, as well as a powerful paralyzation touch.

Not cannon but: Quote: Death Knight “There is no horror you have known that can prepare you for what I am about to reveal.”
Those who take up the black sword of the Death Knights in the name of powerful evil gods are not all undead. They aren’t even all evil, since sometimes evil gods simply curse warriors in order to screw with them. But a lot of them are evil and undead, and that gives the Death Knight his classic image.
Prerequisites: BAB: +6 Skills: Knowledge (Religion) 4 ranks Special: Must have proficiency with all martial weapons. Special: Must have had nonviolent contact with a Fiend.
