So I had an idea for a goblin shaman type toon but ran into a problem when it came to having a worg... it says they are magical and speak a language so I am guessing that means a worg would not be OK to have for an animal companion since a companion can't be magical. This is just my assumption though.

Correct. Only non magical animals may serve as a companion.

Does not stop you from reskinning a summon though.

yes that was my next thought... Dire Wolf as a companion... and begin to corrupt him through magic... get to epic.. take EMD and request the dire wolf to become a worg... aka reskin EMD... bring about some RP for the character and add to the request when it would be made *if it would be* hard time shuffling two characters right now as is.

Does the non-magical companion ruling work the same on familiars? I could swear I read somewhere that for a caster to make a bond with a creature to become a familiar it couldn't be a magical creature. But that never really made sense to me seeing all the creatures you can make companions in NWN, Imp, Fairy Dragons and Pseudodragons etc.

That's where Familiar and Improved Familiar come in, I think. The standard Familiar feat grants a normal, non-magical animal, while the Improved Familiar feat allows you to choose a creature that's not just an animal. I always just looked at it as everyone getting the Improved Familiar feat automatically in NWN.

That is correct, Jes, but we basically assume everyone in Amia has the Improved Familiar feat.

Familiars and Companions have some similarities, but they function very differently in the big picture. You can't really compare how they function to how Companions function.

But yes, only natural animals work as animal companion, not outsiders or magical beasts, so Worgs are a no go. Even though the animal companion functions as a magical beast for mechanical purposes, they're still actually supposed to be animals. Once an animal is made a magical beast -- using the PnP Awaken spell, for example -- they can no longer be an animal companion again.
