~ Poisons A-Z ~
extended edition

======================================================================================

Introduction

The art of crafting effective poisons is prized by every assassin. The amount of gold you may save by
making your own instead of buying it, is considerable. On the next few pages I shall attempt to expand
and revise the knowledge that has been gathered so far. Mind that this manual is a subject to changes
and updates as the new species, their usages and descriptions are discovered every day.

Aconite

Aconite of Wolf's Bane is a species of Aconitum, native and endemic to western and central Amia. It
is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 1m tall, with hairless steams and leaves. The leaves are
rounded, 5-10 cm in diameter, palmately divided into five to seven deeply lobed segments. The flowers
are dark purple to bluish-purple, narrow oblong helmet-shaped, 1-2 cm tall. Like other species in the
genus, it is extremely poisonous, generating enough poison to be used to tip spears and arrows for
hunting and battle.

Aconite it typically used to create poisons that weaken your enemy's physical strength. For the best
results, it is suggested that the plant be collected during the third season, as its active ingredients are
at their highest. Use the whole plant. Leaves fresh, root dried. The blossoms are most useful during the
summer.

Calotropis

Calotropis, commonly known as milkweed or swallow-wort, is a common wasteland weed. Calotropis
belongs to Asclepiadasceae or Milkweed or Ak family which is most abundant in the sub-tropics and
tropics, and rare in cold countries. Fermented mixture of Calotropis and salt is used to remove the hair
from sheep skins to make leather which is much used for inexpensive book-binding. Its powdered roots
are used to make a poison that kills all sorts of verming, ranging from rats to trolls.

Calotropis is known for its negative effects on person's mental abilities, especially on speech, and
sometimes it disables the use of magical talents. Dry the root, powder it, and dilute into a tincture
before adding to your desired poison.

Foxglove

Foxglove can seriously damage one's reflexes, and make even the most agile person very clumbsy. The
flowers of the plant should be strongly coloured when collecting, for best results. Prepare by drying and
diluting into oil. Toxicity results from an overdose and causes anorexia, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea,
as well as sometimes resulting in yellow vision and the appearance of blurred outlines. The entire plant
is toxic (including the roots and seeds). Mortality is rare, but case reports do exist.

Nightshade, deadly

Deadly Nightshade, also known as Belladonna is used to affect the health of your enemy in a direct
manner. First using Nightshade poison on him, you may lower his resistance to other, yet more potent
poisons. Use dried roots and leaves as powder. Its most prominent and most widespread usage is in
reversing and stopping the effects of lycanthropy.

Poison Ivy

Poison ivy grows vigorously throughout much of North Amia. It can grow as a shrub up to about 1.2m
tall, or as a climbing vine on various supports. Older vines on substantial supporters send out lateral
branches that may at first be mistaken for tree limbs. Poison ivy rarely grows at altitudes above 1500
meters.

Touching poison ivy casuses a very irritating rash. If poison ivy is burned and the smoke then inhaled,
thir rash will appear on the lining of the lungs, causing extreme paint and possibly fatal respiratory
difficulty. If poison ivy is eaten, the digestive tract and airways will be affected causing a slow and
painful death.

Poison Ivy can make even the most cunning opponent quickly feebleminded. It is a good poison against
scholars. Collect the leaves as young as possible. Usage: fluid extract of fresh, young leaves.

Thornapple

Thornapple, also known as Devil's Trumpet, Mad hatter, Crazy Tea, or Zombie's Cucumber, is a common
poisonous weed in the Nightshade family. The Devil's Trumpet grows in most habitats, but thrives in
high-nutrient soil. It is found throughout much of the Amia, barring the nothern Islands.

Thornapple is, on average, 30 to 150 cm tall with errect, forking and purple stems. The eaves are
large, 7 to 20 cm long and have irregular teeth similar to those of oak leaves. The flowers are trumpet-
shaped, white to purple, and open and close at irregular intervals during the evening, earning the plant
the nickname Moonflower. The fruit are walnut-sized, egg shaped, and covered in prickles. All parts of
the plant emit a foul odor when crushed or bruised.

The Moonflower makes one "blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, red as a beet, hot as hell, dry as bone,
the bowel and bladder lose their tone, and the heart runs alone." It has been linked to a number of
murders in southwestern Cordor where a number of young men were ritually killed. Goats will
occasionally eat the plant, and subsequently die a slow and painful death.

Stavesacre

All parts of the plant are very poisonous, causing vomiting when eaten, and death in larger amounts.
Gerard Tophunder reports that drinking the seed of larkspur was through to help against the stings of
scorpions, and that other poisonous animals could not move when covered by the herb, but does not
believe it himself. Grieve's herbal reports it is used to keep witches from the stables, probably because
of its blue color.

Stavesacre, especially the tall variety, is a significant cause of cattle poisoning on rangelands in
western Amia. It is more common in high-elevation areas, and many farmers will delay moving cattle
onto such ranges until late summer when the toxicity of the plants is reduced. Stavesacre typically
affects negatively patience and ability to consider actions carefully. It also lowers your enemy's
awareness of his surroundings. Use only ripe seeds. Dry and powder.
