The Vanguard Roles:

The Lord Commander:

The Lord Commander's role is overall command of the Vanguard: they are the direct liaison to the ruling body that they serve (the Temple and the Matron's Council) and filter down their commands to the rest of the Vanguard. They have the "long sight" of the situation: they are instrumental in commanding and dictating the movements of the Vanguard as a whole, leaving the direct training and field command of the Vanguard elements to their Lieutenants, the Heralds.

Such power comes with responsibility however: the failings of the Vanguard fall upon the Lord Commander, not their subordinates which makes him or her responsible for every action the Vanguard takes in both domestic and aggressive affairs.

In the event of the Lord Commander resigning, or being replaced either by challenge from a Herald or forced retirement by the Queen's Whip, the replacement may only be from a Herald of the Vanguard.

The Queen's Whip:

The Queen's Whip is the direct link between the Temple and the Vanguard, a representative who offers advice for the Lord Commander and acts as the eyes and ears for the Temple and/or Matron's council. Their primary role is to keep the faith strong in the Vanguard, be they Lolthite or Selvetargtlin, by ensuring the edicts of the Temple are maintained and by leading with example when it is required. The Queen's Whip has the authority to forcibly resign a Lord Commander should the circumstance be genuine enough, but aside from such priviledge their role is to advise the Lord Commander and his subordinates below him.

However, the priviledge of being the Queen's Whip does not come without its responsibilities: if the Lord Commander, or the Vanguard, fails in its duty be it on the battlefield or during civil protection then the Queen's Whip is held responsible. The Vanguard's success and loyalty is her responsibility and the failure of the Vanguard is considered a failure on her in the eyes of her superiors.

The Queen's Whip is elected by the Temple and must be of either Yathrin or Yath'tallar rank. The Queen's Whip cannot be a Matron of the city due to their other responsibilities. In the absence of a potential candidate, the Ul'ath'tallar takes temporary responsibility as The Queen's Whip until a candidate is able to be selected for the role. The Queen's Whip can be changed at any time by the Temple.

The Heralds:

The Heralds are the Lieutenants of the Lord Commander, representing specialists in their particular field of warfare or study. They are responsible for the training and skills management of those beneath them during times of peace and during times of war they are the sub-field commanders who direct the Vanguard directly beneath them. Where the Lord Commander has overall field Command from a higher vantage point, the Heralds enact his will by leading from the front. But most importantly, the Heralds are the advisors to the Lord Commander who share their specialist insight into situations that the Vanguard faces as a whole.

There are three Herald Positions: Discipline, Knowledge and Vigilance.

The Herald of Vigilance is responsible for the direct protection of the Priestesses and the Temple, similar in nature to the Spiderguard of previous settlements. The soldiers designated under the Command of the Herald of Vigilance are his sole responsibility, which differs from the rest of the Vanguard, which makes him an extremely influential male in the city. ((This position can only be held by a DM NPC))

The Herald of Discipline, the "First Warrior" takes up a role similar to that of Ul'Saruk in the former Melee Magthere: they are the subject matter expert in martial warfare and the training of their subordinates in the form of martial combat is of high priority to them. They lead from the front and by example for their fellow Vanguard and also play an important role in sharing their tactical opinion to both the Lord Commander and their fellow Heralds. In order to qualify for the Herald of Discipline, one must be of significant martial ability but also express a sound mind for tactics. And finally,

The Herald of Knowledge, the "First Mage" takes up a role similar to the former Ul'Faeruk in the former Sorcere academy. They are the subject matter expert in all things arcane and the organisation of further study and learning between their mages is one of their primary goals. They are the direct liaison to the Lord Commander regarding all matters arcane but are also expected to lead their fellow Vanguard when the time comes. In order to qualify for the Herald of Knowledge, the candidate must have a high level of understanding in the arcane field.

A Herald has direct command over the Vanguard beneath them, regardless of their skillsets. The Herald of Discipline can command mages under his command just as the Herald of Knowledge can command those of martial ability. Although training in their individual disciplines is first priority, it is also highly encouraged of the Heralds to promote cooperation between the two sub-groups: both soldier, mage and spy must work together for the Vanguard to achieve its results successfully.

In the absence of the Lord Commander for whatever reason (incapacitation, absence or unavailablility), a present Herald may take temporary command of the situation and make decisions on behalf of the Vanguard as a whole. If more then one Herald is in attendance then they share command between them. However, when such circumstances of command arise, the Herald in question is responsible for the conduct of the Vanguard: the Vanguard's failure is their failure.

A Herald is selected from candidates of the Vanguard they command. A Herald's position can be challenged, however, to prevent a new Herald from being elected every week, the Herald position must be held for ((one month RL)) before it can be contested. Heralds may also challenge the Lord Commander for their position.

The Vanguard:

If the Lord Commander is the Brain of the entity, the Heralds its eyes and ears then the Vanguardsmen and women are its body. They are the rank and file who serve the city and their superiors in achieving the goals of the Vanguard. Every profession has their place in the Vanguard and every profession is a vital cog in the great machine: further advancement in the art of study be it martial or arcane is highly encouraged and the Heralds are there to ensure that this happens.

The Vanguard are expected to follow the orders of their superiors (both within the Vanguard and without) but they are also encouraged to share their insights with their superiors: innovation and ingenius are encouraged traits as Vanguard operatives can be expected to work alone for prolonged periods of time. Insubordination within all ranks is heavily scrutinised however so one must learn the fine line between innovation and insubordination quickly.

The Vanguard's primary duties during times of peace are civil protection as well as protection of the Priestesses and Matrons during their cyclic activity. They are also responsible for the maintenance and advancement of their own skillsets under the watchful eyes of their Heralds. During times of war, they are the first and only line of defence for the city and they epitomise the Vanguard's sole approach to war: defence through a better offence.

Vanguard members may challenge their Heralds for their positions officially. However, to prevent a new Herald from being elected every week, the Herald position must be held for ((one month RL)) before it can be contested.

Q&A:

//This is my original Q&A that shares a bit of history as to why the Vanguard came about. It's a little out of date but it's a useful information piece.

//Guys and Girls, just to share a quick few points to give a Q&A for those who may or may not know what's going on.

What is the aim of the Vanguard?

The aim of the Edonil Vanguard is to eventually succeed the current individual academies (magthere/sorcere/VDVM/PC spiderguards) with a single, consolidated heirarchy to better assist us with organising events and to better utilise the space we have around Edonil.

The Vanguard also allows Dusty or any designated DM to become involved on a more day-to-day/everyman's level instead of always possessing spiders if they so desire.

Naturally this process isn't happening overnight as both the Magthere and Sorcere have very different structures, but we hope that the process happens sooner rather then later and that it happens smoothly for the enjoyment of everyone involved.

Why are we replacing the academies?

This is a tough one to answer.

I've been playing Drow on and off since 2006 so I've seen firsthand that the individual academies have always been recognisable features in Drow Role Play, dating back to Udos Dro'xun and even Arelith before it. I also know that many people have spent lots of time and put lots of effort into the academies with their role play over the years so I can understand that some people would be pretty pissed at the Vanguard's implementation.

But over time, particularly recently due to timezone differences and reduced players, its become quite challenging to effectively run, manage and coordinate 2 - 3 separate academies, particularly when those academies are vital in the decision making process. This puts a significant delay on the implementations of decisions which directly impacts our enjoyment. Nobody is to blame for this so don't be pointing fingers, its just the draw back of having players spread across the entire world: no time is perfect for everyone.

The principle we are aiming to achieve with the Vanguard is "less equals more." If we can cut down on the number of cogs in the decision making process, we can action stuff more quickly (Matron council *hint hint* :P ) and hopefully create more enjoyment for all involved.

If everything goes smoothly, the level of role play you would find in the individual academies should not change in the Vanguard: I've designed the Herald positions to maintain resemblances to the old hierarchies for that senior mentoring for the different roles, whilst also encouraging integration and mixed team tactics between the different specialties to solidify that unity between them that the Vanguard represents.

Everything mentioned above may seem like a spit to the face for the current academy folks, particularly the academy leaders but please be assured that this is not the intention. Current academy leaders are being given candidacy preference for the Herald positions to help assist in this transition phase to the consolidated Vanguard: As experienced faction leaders, P Three and Equaliser I can certainly use your experience and advice, if you wish to take the positions.

Why is the Vanguard structured as so?

The easiest way to explain the structure is simplicity.

I have kept the structure basic for now (big thanks goes to Genar, as the structure is heavily influenced by the layout of the Obsidian Vanguard as well as Ultrinnan's NPC Vanguard) while it is first getting implemented and depending on the feedback I get, I may add a few more steps in between to expand the hierarchical chain a little more. But for now simplicity is key, especially while we transition across.

The Lord Commander position is to streamline the Vanguard with most of Amia's modern factions, placing a single individual in charge to make the decisions. No surprises there.

The Queen's Whip position is not necessarily part of the Vanguard so to speak as they aren't directly part of the Hierarchy chain; they represent the Temple's eyes and ears over the Vanguard and act as an advisor to the Lord Commander and the heralds. They're also a source of inspiration for the rest of the Vanguard. Imagine their role very similar to a 40k Lord Commissar in a Guard Regiment. (except without the summary executions... unless there's a good reason!)

It also gives the Temple a hands on approach to the Vanguard to tie in that RP connection.

The heralds serve three major purposes:

1) They are the backup plan if the Lord Commander is absent/unavailable/disappears without trace. If the 2 PC heralds are also absent at the same time as the Lord Commander, or for some scary reason can't agree on a particular decision or over whose in charge, the DM's herald then takes charge; creating a backup plan to the backup plan until the PC Heralds get their shit squared away. That way someone is always there to make a decision be it player or DM.

2) Secondly, The Heralds are the subject matter expert in their specialist field similar to the current academy leaders, moreso then the Lord Commander who has to look at the greater picture and deal with the politics. They're the mentors of the Vanguard below them as well as the advisors to the Lord Commander above them. Their role is probably the most important in the Vanguard itself. And finally,

3) To inspire fun. One person can only do so much as we all know. I know I'll be encouraging my Heralds to run events independently.

The Vanguard is everyone else at this stage. As I mentioned earlier, for now the structure is quite simple to help us transition across, but if the feedback I get is positive or constructive I may add a few more steps to the Hierarchy down the track.

What is the Role Play justification for this implementation:

See here, here, here and here.

We've listened to all your problems, opinions and frustrations both ICly and OOCly and this is the first step in addressing those issues from a player level. At this stage its not perfect... but its a start. If this works, we can implement further change.

When do you aim to implement this Vanguard by:

As soon as possible, provided everyone's happy with it and the transition from the academies goes smoothly.

I'm not sure about a few things, who do I ask to specify further:

Send a PM to Malios Darkblade with your questions and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Please don't post any OOC questions or statements in this thread.

Below is the weekly bulletin for the Vanguard, issued to the Vanguard personnel and the ruling body of the surviving remnants.

Quote:
"Vanguard,

Firstly, congratulations goes to the newly elected Heralds: Naltyrr of House Ussen'dvhid (Knowledge) and Xirin of House D'Vilrath (Discipline). Due to their performances in recent cycles since the fall of Edonil, which eyes have been watching (including the Ul'ath'tallar), they have earned their titles. They are specialists in their field of study and are your direct chain to approach if I am unavailable. To my two Heralds, know that responsibility comes with the priviledge of rank: if we fail, we are responsible for that failure both in civil protection and times of conquest. Train your Vanguard well and uphold your duty to Queen and city.

We also add one to our ranks this cycle: Veranas of House Vilrath has been enlisted into the Vanguard under the approval of the Herald of Knowledge. Because he is a mage early in his career, those of similar talent with experience are advised to assist the aspiring mage in his duties to ensure he becomes productive to the cause quickly.

Now, for a brief of the current situation. For now, conquest of the settlement continues. Under the direction of the Herald of Discipline, defencive patrols are to occur around the perimeter of the three building complexes on the North East of the Island and they are to extend down to the cavern where the water spring is located. The enemy, identified as Skum, have been utilising mob tactics ranging in number from a dozen to several dozen at a time; our greatest defence from such attacks for now is inside those buildings.

Due to the possibility of Skum inhabiting the building interiors, when approved by the ruling body ((ie date pending)) we are to storm the structures and clear them by force under the direction of the Herald of Discipline. I say this now: we are to do this in a manner that does not compromise the structural integrity of the complexes. Loss of one of those complexes is unacceptable and will delay our conquest quite significantly. Once the building complexes are clear of our enemy, maintenance crews can begin the clean up and we can begin settlement.

In the meantime, when not active in the patrols or storming the complexes the arcane disciples in the Vanguard under the direction of the Herald of Knowledge are to concentrate on warding our buildings appropriately or divining potential long-term solutions to thwart our enemy. The Herald of Knowledge will brief you further on this.

This is an Official Vanguard weekly notice,

The Scholar. Lord Commander of the Vanguard."

Notices written in drow are left at various places on the new drow island settlement and L'Obsul's Tradehouse.

Arcanists of the Vanguard

All are to report to me as soon as possible, there is much work to be done in securing our new city. You can contact me by leaving a message at the L'Obsul Tradehouse.

As for all other mages who have not signed up to the Vanguard, I really do insist you sign up if you are to be of any use to us. Prestige and power awaits those who act decisively to build the drow's power in this new beginning, meaning sign up!

"Vanguard,

Due to recent successes by both our Mage Cohorts and the Herald of Discipline, the trade house has been established and supplies are beginning to roll out to the populace. Morale has increased as a result and it is one of many successes to come; however, the Skum are still attacking our positions so all round defence must still be maintained. Now that the Temple has re-opened eyes are watching: do not let your guard down, without or within.

To our mage cohort, the Herald of Knowledge's plans have been approved: you are to continue performing these projects under his direction, when your duties allow. To our martial cohort, all round defence of both our established ground and our superiors is to be maintained, predominantly keeping the skum away from the caverns, the Trade House and Temple.

Regardless of designated taskings however, active patrols between Mage and Martial cohorts is to be conducted: the two styles will need to mesh in order to aggressively assert ourselves in the coming cycles from both enemies in our own domain and beyond. If we wish to rule, we must first win and we win by fighting with more cohesion then our enemies, lest we conduct war like the Skum.

To assist with such cohesion, as per the Matron's Council's instructions, the Vanguard is being mobilised for a tasking on ((Sunday 02:00 GMT)). All available Vanguard are to answer the Council's summons at this time; you will receive a more thorough briefing closer to date.

This is an official Vanguard Notice,

The Scholar. Lord Commander of the Vanguard."

"Vanguard,

The Matrons and High Priestess have elected the Island's naming day to occur on ((Sunday 07/03/2013 at 02:00 GMT)). In order to prepare for this occasion where we may once again be added to the map, the Vanguard has been delegated to ensure that the Island is 'Skum Free.'

This operation is designated 'Fish Hook.'

The objectives of Op Fish Hook are the following:

* Objective 01: Secure the physical barriers of the Island.
* Objective 02: Secure safe passage of the Spiders from the Barges to the Temple.
* Objective 03: Provide a sacrifice to bless the altar and the settlement's rebirth.

Objective 01: Secure the Physical Barriers of the Island.

In order to establish all-round defence of the Island to provide both early warning detection and fire cover, the four towers that are located upon the Island's corners are to be cleared, secured and re-purposed to our needs. This will be performed as followed:

* Prior to the operation's commencement, the following must occur:

- Our Mage Cohort must ascertain every shred of the Island's history that they can, utilising spells, books or old fashioned archaeology. We are searching primarily for any information of the Island's previous defences, including layouts of the towers themselves or any subterranean sewers or tunnels we have yet to discover that the Skum may utilise. Our espionage operatives may use their skills to assist our mage cohort in gathering intelligence.

- All members of the Vanguard are to continue repelling raiding Skum parties from the Island's surface, particularly the Eastern shore near the fountain entrance.

* During the Operation's Commencement the Vanguard's forces will be split into four groups, one per tower, to storm them simultaneously and clear them of any Skum that may be inhabiting them. The designated groups are the following ((these may change on the day pending who's available)):

Group 1:
- Naltyrr Ussen'dvhid (Herald of Knowledge)
- Isendut't'ar Ussen'dvhid
- Drakos (Mercenary)

Group 2:
- Zah'har Vilrath
- Xirin Vilrath (Herald of Discipline)
- Kha'less Vilrath

Group 3:
- Vagrathrall Vilrath
- Unuldor Vilrath (Designated Group Leader)
- Victyr
- Barra'Keeshe

Group 4:
- Veranas Hlathar Vilrath
- The Scholar (Lord Commander)
- Shalyma

Each group has a designated mage or spellcaster from the Vanguard capable of casting antipathy upon the towers once they are cleared. All personnel are to ensure their designated mage remains alive throughout the operation. Each group must also be prepared to be accompanied by either a Priestess or Matron; if this happens, follow their commands and advise them when necessary.

The signal to commence the simultaneous attack will be the the sound of a Dragon's Roar. Once the towers are taken, red flares are to be fired from the ramparts to signify that the towers are in Drow hands. Once the flares are visible, Vanguard operatives may then move in to replace the advance parties.

Once the towers have been successfully cleared and Vanguard operatives are in place to provide high cover with their crossbows, Objective two will then commence.

Objective 02: Escort the Spiders to the Temple.

The Spiders we liberated from Edonil have spent prolonged periods of time on the barges and will need to be escorted from the docks to the Temple for further protection and nourishment. Unfortunately in their vulnerable state they pose as a food source to the Skum so heavy resistance is to be expected.

As we are dealing with the sacred Children of the Dreadqueen, we will conduct this under the coordination of the High Priestess or the Herald of Vigilance in her absence who are skilled in directing such creatures. The deaths of the 'children' at the hands of the Skum will be unacceptable to our superiors: do not be the one to fail them.

Once the 'children' are safely within the protection of the Temple, Objective 02 will be completed.

Objective 03: Find a fitting Sacrifice for the Naming Ceremony

Objective 03 will happen simultaneously to objective 02. Our less experienced members ((ie our low ECL characters)) will conduct dives into the surrounding waters while the majority of Skum are diverted to the surface after the Spiders. Utilising the distraction, the team's objective is to capture any Skum leader or Skum of significant importance to grace the altars during the naming ceremony.

The reason our inexperienced have been selected for this task is to provide them a chance to prove themselves in the eyes of their Matrons: do not bring shame to your houses or your settlement with your deaths.

Once all objectives are completed and the Island is secure, the Naming Ceremony will commence.

Op 'Fish Hook' will require pedantic management to ensure all parts of the operation go smoothly. Prior preparation is critical: To our Espionage and Martial operatives, any and all information of the tower's layouts and the Island's history is priority, however this is secondary to eliminating roving packs of Skum upon the Island's surface should you encounter them. To our Arcane Cohort, your priority is to scry every minor detail of the Island's history, utilising any manner you see fit to find the Island's former defences and layout. This will assist us in our planning for the operation, as well as the completion of our planned arcane warding system.

As for our inexperienced operatives, I am seeking volunteers to conduct Objective 03. ((If you're interested, drop me a PM))

Op 'Fish Hook' is being commenced to prove to our Matrons that the Vanguard is disciplined enough and prepared enough to pave the way for our future Empire: A secure Island and the gift of a sacrifice will be the Vanguard's contribution to the Empire's foundations and will bring great glory to your house should it be successful. We have less then eleven cycles before the operation commences. Under the direction of your Heralds, preparation begins now.

This is an official Vanguard notice,

The Scholar. Lord Commander of the Vanguard."

//For all IC queries and IC actions of your toons in the prepatory phase, I've made a separate thread for you to post them in. Any OOC queries, feel free to send me a PM.

Significant changes have occured recently in the Vanguard Hierarchy. The members of the Vanguard, the Settlement's Matrons and the High Priestess are notified only mere moments after such becomes public knowledge.

Where appropriate, notices are given out and spread by word of mouth that Unuldor d'Vilrath, the new herald of discipline, expects all warriors under the vanguard to report for a private consultation so that he can assess their strengths and abilities

(Players can either PM me or, preferably, track me down online and we'll do it in game. OOC: After your level, class and general skill set. IC: wants to know your skills, any Job profession you have, any special techniques or abilities (whirlwind attack, sneak attack, blindfight) and whether you fight with brawn or finesse, etc.)

The following letters are addressed out to the known residencies of Vanguard personnel: The current Heralds receiving the first letter and the Vanguard receiving the second.

Quote:
"Honoured Heralds,

I wish an audience with you as soon as possible. There is business to discuss, namely who of you will succeed the Lord Commander following Xirin's retirement. Until then, I will assist in the management of Vanguard affairs per the First Matron's request... but make no mistake, I am not the Lord Commander: only the two of you are fit for that role.

This audience must be sooner then later: there is work to do and glory to be had.

The Scholar."

Quote:
"Honoured Vanguard,

As during the final cycles of Edonil, I find it again necessary to rally you behind the banner to conduct the Queen's Work for the good of the settlement. Your presence is summoned to rally behind your Heralds once more.

Do not leave them waiting.

The following notice is distrubuted to all panelled Vanguard personnel:

Quote:
"Vanguard,

This cycle we are joined by two recruits. Gauss'dril d'Vilrath, a soldier from our First Noble House who has been deemed fit for service by the Herald of Knowledge. D'aron D'Vilrath has also willingly accepted a position within the Vanguard's ranks to serve both for his house and the settlement in its future endevours.

On a side note, the following have effectively been stripped from the Vanguard due to inactivity:

- Vagrathral D'Vilrath.
- Isendut'tar Ussen'dvhid
- Shalyma
- Barra'keeshe
- Victyr

Should you wish to reinstate yourselves, I wish to see applications for Renewal of Service presented to either myself or the Vanguard's Heralds.

Arcanists of the Vanguard

In four cycles time we will conduct a series of experiments in runes, the antipathy spell and perhaps other things to determine a lasting and permanent solution to the skum problem that continues to plague our isle.

If you are an arcanist and resident of Nec'perya, but not of the Vanguard, you are also invited to attend if you wish to pledge your skills and power to the Vanguard.

We are to gather and meet at the Temporary Vanguard Sorcere Headquarters, the location where all the dismembered skum bodies are stored.

The attendance of Zah'har is mandatory of course.

"Vanguard,

There have been some considerable changes in recent cycles.

I have decided to pass on my regency of the Lord Commander Role to Naltyrr, the Herald of Knowledge. Going forth, he will be your new Lord Commander.

Zah'har of House Vilrath will be filling his former position as the Herald of Knowledge.

Congratulations are in order for these individuals.

This is an official Vanguard notice,

The Scholar."

//Just so there's no confusion, I can't devote enough time to fulfill this role anymore. Its not fair on you guys so I decided to pass it on to someone who can.

This thread has been unstickied.
