Suggestion:
weapon properties
weight (lb) 5
cost (gp) 2
damage 1d8
criticals x3
damage type piercing
size Medium
proficiency Martial

They've been made Medium and Simple, but there's more to the story. The Weapon Focus issue is supposed to be fixed in EE but you still cannot take ANY Weapon Focus Feats for Trident without Martial Proficiency. While someone without the proficiency can pick it up, in reality no one uses a weapon without the requisite focuses, unless they are a caster holding a weapon for it's non-combat enchantments.

Therefore, given the above I suggest it be treated like other Medium 1D8 Martial Weapons like Warhammer and Battle Axe and granted x3 Criticals. It's then the Piercing option among the three and there's one of each. If it makes more sense, go ahead and switch it back to Martial too. I'm certain it will have no impact since the weapon is barely used as it is.

Of course this is all assuming the critical multiplier is even something you can modify.

Generally speaking, trident is a martial weapon and it being simple, is incorrect. The weapon is 1d8×2. The fact that you have to take feats to focus in it is a corrective action for anyone who wishes to focus in it. Those that "get over" by wielding it as a simple weapon with no foci, do so to little effect. Of course...I could be wrong.
