// *gasp* The update is in, so this post is slightly late. Nonetheless, here you have it....
The forest was relatively quiet this night. No adventurers were braving its dangerous depths, no Horde armies marched along the roads or paths.
Out near a cliff, the silence was broken by snarling, and the sounds of combat. Two displacer beasts were fighting over the corpse of a recently killed deer. The elder of the two was the larger, and as such, one would expect the younger, smaller one to back down. But this one was strong, quick and wiry in its youth. And obviously a bit arrogant.
After a few minutes of circling, and intimidation attempts, the combat began. The smaller got the first strike, charging headlong at the elder, knocking it to the ground. It slid to a halt, and jumped back towards the elder, who rolled, and used its powerful legs to throw off the younger, who couldn’t dodge because of its charge, gaining a chance to get to its feet again.
The younger leapt back to its feet and charged again, but this time the elder, being more experienced in such combats, stepped to the side, and clamped down hard on the youngsters neck with its powerful jaws, and using its own momentum against it, spun with the charge to throw the smaller beast into the side of the cliff.
With a yelp, and a heavy thud, the younger slid to the ground, obviously injured. The older beast moved in for the kill, when suddenly a loud “crack” echoed throughout the woods, followed by a deep rumble as the ground shook. Confused by the noise, and cowed by the rumbling, the elder used its best judgment and fled into the forest. The younger slowly, painfully, got to its feet, using the cliffside as leverage, in an attempt to escape as well. Then the rock the younger beast was leaning against crumbled inward, the displacer beast falling to the ground again, rolling into the new gap in the wall of stone, and falling to its death into the great chasm on the opposite side of the cliff.
The ground rumbled a few moments longer as the stone shifted, and the debris settled. Then it was quiet again. And the forest was dark, as before. But the cave in the cliff was not. A strange glow shone from the other side, where a multitude of lights shone down on an ancient bridge across the chasm in whose depths the young, and arrogant displacer beasts beaten and bloodied corpse resided.
The Rainbow Bridge was open once again. The Electric Castle lay beyond.
