Elite City Guards of the Commonwealth of Cordor arrive at every entrance and exit to the city, including the docks where commercial vessels come and go, and begin to fiercely scrutinize those coming and going, moreso than ever before (and presumably at some expense to the city). Caravans are halted and searched without fail. Individuals are questioned about their citizenship status - and even though many cannot provide a Certificate of Citizenship, they are, for the time being, allowed egress after a litany of questions.

"From where do you hail?"
"What business do you have here?"
"What is your name?"
"Do you know a citizen of the Commonwealth?"

If the questions are not answered to their satisfaction, then the people are turned away and not allowed to come and go as they please. Although only the stubborn and the stupid are refused entry for not answering these simple questions (or at the very least lying), the Ministry of Law's oppressive dominion over the city's checkpoints becomes noticeable and somewhat vexing.

But not without good reasons...

...for rumors abound within a matter of days that the once provisional and now apparently approved-without-a-vote council of the Commonwealth of Cordor is missing two of its most esteemed leaders.

The Minister of Health and Public Welfare, Johnathin Leohnard, is rumored to have been kidnapped on an excursion to visit a grave in Moribund, his one loyal Law Knight guardian bested and defeated by the kidnappers. There has been no public announcement of this, but several stories spin from it.

The Banites kidnapped him and are taking retaliation for their recent incarceration, and are demanding a Temple to Bane be built somewhere beneath Cordor.

The Horsemen of the Apocalypse stormed the mortuary island on black wyverns and took him off into the sky, and are now brainwashing Johnathin Leohnard to be Johnathin "Unsanitary" Leohnard, the horseman in charge of bringing pestilence and disease and trench foot to loyal soldiers.

The Noble's Army kidnapped him and are even now torturing him for information about the Commonwealth in some secret dungeon...most disturbingly, in a noble-owned dungeon somewhere in a noble home in Kohlingen...

The Red Wizards of Thay have sold him into slavery in Thay.

Adventurers grabbed him in the middle of the night and tore him arms and legs from their sockets before devouring his torso like savage cannibals, and they are now sexually defiling his severed head in a brothel in the Lowlands Delta.

Enzan the Clockmaster has returned, and those were his clockworks!

A mad gnome and possible former lover of Johnathin Leohnard feels jilted and has kidnapped him to return him to a grave.

The kidnapping is a publicity stunt intended to accrue public interest in the Commonwealth's government.

The gods took him back, because he was too good to have ever returned to this world.

Perhaps more or less distressing, depending upon your interest, is the rumor that the enigmatic Minister Tytalus of the Ministry of Magic has not shown up for at the Commonwealth Center since the tenday's end. The Ministry of Magic is not at a standstill, with quiet clerks who refuse to say much of anything to anyone going about their tasks as though nothing has changed, even though the Minister himself is nowhere to be found.

There are no rumors to explain his disappearance, save that he probably wandered off into the world as mysteriously as he showed up in Cordor.

In addition, many adventurers are shocked to discover that their portal rods suddenly fail to function in Cordor for no discernible reason - save, perhaps, the Minister of Magic's absence, as the two unrelated incidences seem to have occurred at roughly the same time.

*Xal listens, his face become a mixture of annoyance and surprise. The rumors of the Cordorian minister disappearing aggravate him, but clearly of more concern is the news of Tytlus having gone. Looking at his portal rod and then scanning the skies above and around the city of Cordor he grins.*

"Well played. Well played indeed."

*After reading of the rumors from one of her -many- agents reports, High General Legion sets the report down on her desk gazing over it flickering in the light of the candlebra with her arms crossed sitting comfortably secure in the chair of her office, in the upper levels of Genesis. She laughs when she reads about the Horsemen rumor then thinks out loud as she often does in private*

"Black wyverns!? heh why didn't anyone -tell- me we had black wyverns ta ride, could'ah saved me quite abit o' walkin. heh trenchfoot indeed, effective but not my style. How th' hells do these rumors get started?"

*Laughs shaking her head rolling her eyes, then gets a serious look on her face.*

"so he skipped out did he hmm int'resting."

*Immediately gets out a peice of paper and starts writing to ...someone.*

Crow hears rumors from some people traveling through the forest about missing officials of Cordor.
He could care less, there is a tree that has been mutilated by wizardry that needs attention, and his priorities are set.
He wonders what the price on his head will be.

The Headmaster of the Monolith of Mystra does not seem to return to the lonely Ruathym isle as the ninth day of the ten-day becomes the tenth, and as the ten-day ends. Though this may be noted by only by a few, alone. And may well be coincidental.

~~~
Yet, at the same time that night finds the dawn in the Commonwealth, sleep seems to elude a particular mustached mage as he paces. In his mind, numbers tumble in stunned disbelief...
Twelve... One. Eleven... two. Ten... three.
"Time, it makes you wonder. You said it was in accepting fate that you control it. You were wrong, Johann. There is no fate. There is no place for you in the stars. Not anymore. Fate. Fortune. Folly..."
Nine... Four. Eight... five. Seven...six. Six... seven.
"Yet at the end, you saved me. I do not understand why. Though, now at the end, I am beginning to understand, I think..."
Five...eight. Four... nine. Three... ten. Two... eleven. One... twelve.
"The end? The beginning? Which is this? Time... time, it makes one wonder. There is all time, and there is no time."
...Zero...
Josalynn makes her way to the moribund ferry where she tries to charm her way, using her song and gypsy wiles, to gain first information from the ferryman then access to Moribund so she can talk to Igor and the others there to try and find out -exactly- what is going on.
After finding out what little she can at the ferry, Josalynn patiently seeks out Jonathans Law Knight escort and offers him healing of mind or body, through magic, council, massage or simple song. As the revelmistress of Lliira in the Temple of Love, she tries to persuade him of her abilities to aid him .... and of course offers to listen to his story to see what aid she may best offer. She also reminds him that as a priestess, what ever he may tell her can -never- go any further.
If her status as a citizen is brought up, she does insist that she is currently awaiting word back from her application to become one.
The Captain is very busy these days, walking at a quick pace--moving with purpose, some would say. She is rarely seen catching a break, not even for meals--instead she eats and drinks small foodstuffs on the way to her next destination. Her habit of checking her pocketwatch has become a near-obsession, and she is most often seen checking a few times every hour in a fluid three-point motion of drawing it from her cloak pocket, checking it, then putting it away.
She visits the check points, the gates, the Commonwealth Center, the caravan stops, the watch house, the Moribund ferry, amongst a plethora of other locations about the city's districts. She seems to remain fairly kind, however, and willing to have short interruptions on her busy schedule.
Amid her fast-paced (perhaps hectic) extra shifts, she 'requests' (though she is actually quite insistent) on a meeting with the one remaining Minister, and inquires pointedly about the wounded law knight.
A silver plated paladin of Helm, doubles his efforts while guarding the streets of Cordor. Private Chevailaes is quick to calm others or to meet citizens with a soothing and charismatic smile.
His rounds, seem circular about the checkpoints and the heavy trafficked thoroughfare of the city forum. Never far from his lips are words of confidence and encouragement, when speaking about the vigilant vanguard of the commonwealth's people.
Below in the underdark word reaches keen ears and perceptive eyes look upward before they narrow as a smile forms on a thoughtful face.
Above in Cordor itself a different set of eyes, eyes with concern, begins an investigation of their own.
Daniel seems to pay no more mind to the event besides to calmly present his Certificate of Citizenship at the checks and that of his son on thier way through on a day out in the city. Regulars in the city guard would likely guess them on thier way to Okappa's or perhaps the boat to Kohl as is normal for the pair when seen about town
She encourages the citizenry to attend in a caring manner, attempting to assuage some of the paranoia.
Jack muses to himself as he walks about Cordor from various location to various location. He scratches at his stubble on his chin with his knuckles as he goes about his business, muttering quietly to himself to keep from disturbing the large Chultan wielding a greatsword following behind him wherever he goes.
If someone happens to overhear his mutterings half the time one would guess he's babbling nonsense in some dead language, the other half would hear it more clearly.
"Now now... Smithey, why would have gone and done that? Hm? Doesn't seem like too good of a move, but I'm sure you have your reasons... I guess in due time."
During Tuomas' most recent passes through the city he seems quite respectful, answering of the queries of the Guardsman truthfully and honestly.
"I hail from the Ruathym Monolith, passing through the city and also checking at the Market Hall for any merchants of note , My name is Tuomas Valo, and I know a few citizens, though Citizen Xee and Nevaeh Tarvencia are the two that come to immediate mind. Additionally, I apologize for my not attending further citizenship information sessions in a while at the Bureau of the Census but my various arcane works have rendered it more difficult to attend, though rest assured they are works that serve the spirit of the Commonwealth in many cases." is an example answer though he is not always as long winded.
Anytime Elle enters the city she has no problem answering the questions openly.
"From where do you hail?"
I am coming from Kohl (or the forest, which ever it was that day)
"What business do you have here?"
I come to work on some clothing and do some shopping
"What is your name?"
My name? Full name? okay. Well my full name is Kylie Ky Bubbles the Second Ellette Eliza Leinora Laybe Elyanna Was'blind Ma'fendel Sylgerand. The common names I go by are Ellette or Elle. My parents are Willieam and Kylie Ky Bubbles.
"Do you know a citizen of the Commonwealth?"
Indeed I do! Captain Nevaeh, shes a nice lady, her brother Erik is even lovelier. Miss Xaviera, my daughter is waiting to hear if shes been accepted. Her name is Josalynn, priestess at the temple of love. I also know more but I cant recall off the top of my head to be sure if Im positive if the yare or arent citizens. Any other questions for me? I would be happy to answer.
She would always end with a smile and an incline of her head.
Elle had left Kohl for the day looking sharp dressed in her new black outfit and high-heeled boots. Her silk material clung to her body so perfectly. Her hair was done up with not a single strand out of place. However, all of this changed as she stepped out of the cabin of the ship and out into the open air of Cordor, where it was pouring down with rain. It was safe to say that she was a bit ticked off.
In her sweet and soft voice that clearly today is more than annoyed she speaks to the dwarf that exited the ship with her. Can you believe this rain?! Its bad enough I wasnt allowed to portal into the temple! This has gotten out of hand!
The two of them mutter and grumble before going their different ways. As Elle enters the East of Cordor she looks around for someone to explain this to her, and finds that the rain has left everyone no choice but to be indoors for the day, so she carries on.
Lady Emma decides to brave the climate of Cordor despite what she has heard from her maidservant. She determines her desire to visit her family is stronger than her concern over local events which have not been favorable to her for some time now. She is in fine fabrics in rich colors, a hood over her head to protect her from the weather.
"From where do you hail?"
She lowers her hood, and though she is respectful, she stands with dignity and has her eyebrow raised, meeting the guard's gaze. "My family is of Cordor, but I am returning from the Monolith of Ruathym."
"What business do you have here?"
"I am visiting my family here."
"What is your name?"
At this, she thinks the guard is being impertinent as her family is well-known; however, she just sets her jaw and respectfully answers, "I am the Lady Emma Vaughn. Of Cordor."
"Do you know a citizen of the Commonwealth?"
"I consider myself a citizen of Cordor. But yes, I am on good terms with the Captain of the guard, Nevaeh, as well as her brother Erik. I am also known by the High Priestess of Sharess, Xaviera. May I pass now, please?"
Perhaps not directly related, but it seems that Tuomas has a specific couple of spells he has set aside each day , one of the 2nd Circle and some of the Sixth Circle of Arcana.
He ensures he has these memorized any time he passes through Cordor , and as well can be seen in the Monolith, or coming back to the Monolith ensuring he has something specific in his spell components pouch.
A fairly irritable tiefling, and her veritable tribe of children, most of whom are red-haired and as bouncy as rubber balls, makes her way to the checkpoint.
"From where do you hail?"
T'Triumvir, aye? Live 'ere wi' me husband, Ein.
"What business do you have here?"
The answer to this is dragging ten-year-old Sasarai up. He's grinning and holding a young cat, who looks fairly terrified, if uninjured, as most cats would be, being held by a ten year old child.
"'E reckoned 'e were gonna get a kitty, sa' we gotta get stuff ta keep it indoors."
"What is your name?"
"Nelene Snyder Cayosin Iunno Shaji! This here's Sasarai, an' Vorel'isk, an' Levex'ir."
The second, to a toddler girl with flame-red hair and her mother's bluegreen eyes, and the last is a nod to the tiny year-old and maybe some boy on her hip, red curls just shagging into his eyes.
"Do you know a citizen of the Commonwealth?"
She grins, fangs glinting.
"Kna' a buncha'em. Nev c'tell ya I ent na' trouble. Xavi too, if she feels like bein' nice. I been good."
She gives a nod and shuffles the kids off toward the Triumvir, shepherding them slowly, and raucously. She doesn't seem to react to the tense air around town; more than likely because such things as reading the notices are beyond her, or because she's so removed from any of it that it just doesn't matter.
I wish to buy from merchant and offer gravedigger service to citizens. Also clean grave sight to help Master Egor. Cleanse land of undeath also.
Hai. She would nod and bow her head. Master Egor and Mistress Xaviera.
Vesur walks past the farms in the northern outskirts of Cordor, heading for the city gate. Almost dragging his feet, struggling to make each step, his shield rests heavy on his arm. He is exhausted from a long journey. As he walks his head is bent down and every so often he pulls his gray hood further over his head. Eager for a cooked meal and a pint of cold ale he makes his way over the small bridge and to the city gate.
"Halt! From where do you hail?"
*Vesur looks up at the city walls barely seeing the guard asking the question, the sun is painful to his eyes*
What?
"From where do you hail?"
Pike off and let me in!
"Answer or you will not be granted access to the city!"
I hail from yer mothers arse. Now let me in!
The guard obviously frustrated at the response manages to maintain his profesionalism and simply ignores Vesur, denying him access to the city.
Vesur, even more frustrated shouts out some curses at the guard and slowly walks off in the direction of Bendir Dale...
Intending to make passage to check in on the goings on in his recent project a verdant and cream garbed magi takes pause as he was headed through to the north from the portal in the southern district of the city.
"Gooday goodman of the watch.."
"From where do you hail?"
"Directly, the Monolith of Mystra goodsir."
"What business do you have here?"
"Tending to business with Oakmist Vale, passing through goodsir of the watch, intending to formulate a removal of a corruption from the lands off an neighboring isle to the tower."
"What is your name?"
"Magus Mentaki."
"Do you know a citizen of the Commonwealth?"
"Celestia's grace.. I've never found reason ask such a query goodsir.. I am uncertain, though I am well known by Captain Nevaeh."
Regardless of if he was allowed to pass or not, he would remain cordial and polite.
Jotting notes in a leather bound tome, her lovely robes flowing around her, she came up short as she perceived guards blocking the path to the front gate of Cordor. Her smile was one of slight surprise and curiosity.
"From where do you hail?"
Cordor. Arrived by ship a few days hence. (she would address him by his rank if it was indicated on his armor).
"What business do you have here?"
Returning a tome that Priestess Tristana asked for assistance in retrieving for her.
"What is your name?"
Caralina Jarian
"Do you know a citizen of the Commonwealth?"
Why yes, Priestess Tristana. Say you wouldn’t know where I might find some Tempurians, would you?
"From where do you hail?"
"From all over, really! But I'm here a lot! You've seen me a lot. I wave! Don't you remember?"
"What business do you have here?"
"Business? I'm just visiting my friends! See? There's one now!" A wave.
"What is your name?"
"My name is Bubbles! What is your name?"
"Do you know a citizen of the Commonwealth?"
"Lots! Let's see... well, I know you, I think, and Nevaeh... and Xavi! Taelar-- I'm friends with him, though I haven't seen him in a while, I hope he's all right-- you haven't seen him lately, have you? --Um... how can I know if they're a citizen? I'm here lots though, you can ask anyone!"
The Captain of the Adventuring Guard is still seen frequently around the city, observing the flow of matters during the time of heightened security. Unlike the first few days of the apparent threat, she is calmer and takes more breaks to handle administrative duties. However, she still continues her rounds on a quick-step and frequently checks her pocketwatch. Busy as always.
Belalad can be seen back about the city going on patrols often alone or with one of the privates. Seemly very strained from picked up guard shifts and volunteer assignments he keeps finding to keep his mind off things.
*Somewhere else in a dimly lit study a dark robed wizard sits, his open palms pressed together as he reads over some report's, slowly a smirk dose appear across his face*
Behold a republic a place of freedom an liberty, an unlike many a republic whose flag is loved an who's people are firm, yet there own flag blinds an shadows them. It is only natural that dictatorial ownership shall take hold, an that the powers at be would do what must be done to make a great city become a city whose name shall never be forgotten.
*The dark robed wizard turns to pat a small skeletal pseudodragon he runs his own bone like hand down its skull an across its backbone an contemplates what is to come next*
The question is my pet, will the prophecy hold true, shall the new coming be literal, or shall the ruins of this city reflect what is to come of the city of the commonwealth, shall the city of copper moons and stars lay in ruin, or will it rise above anyone's wildest expectations.
*with that the dark robed wizard grows silent an continues to read through various tomes in his study pertaining to historical knowledge of "ancient empires"*
Seen coming in usually from the north off one of the carts, a darkly clad man silently makes his way into the city. He sticks to the shadows, his face covered but for his piercing hazel eyes, and rarely makes eye contact with anyone near him. Those near him would only hear him whisper.
"Remove your hood."
He reluctantly slips his hood back, just far enough to reveal his face to the guard in front of him
"From where do you hail?"
"Waterdeep." the man whispers
"Speak up. What business do you have here?"
The man points to his throat and shrugs. He whispers "Personal."
"What is your name?"
"Tyrin" the man whispers out
"Do you know a citizen of the Commonwealth?"
The man pauses for a second and quirks his head. He shrugs once and says softly "Hil'Rash knows me, oh, and uh Jack, he has a place on the west side, you know?"
Upon admission, the man might possibly head to Market Hall, or The Nomad, but most certainly towards south Cordor, where he can be seen in the little park on the hill.
The Captain is still seen around on the streets from time to time, but it would seem that she'd spending more time with administrative duties. When she is on a patrol beat, it's usually alone or in the company of the division's fresher faces.
Tuomas quietly sat in his bed in the Salandran Recovery Ward, smiling to himself. His visitors had all left and all that remained were patients and those attending. He'd almost gotten to the point of recovery though his legs still were somewhat stiff. A thought crossed his mind.
~Nev's news is.. worrying to be sure. She doesn't deserve that fate at all, especially if what she has implied is true about those who would do such to her. I want to help her, but.. I'm a Gnome. Admittedly I'm a Gnome Wizard but... Gond's Gears I'm a GONDITE Gnome Wizard, we DO , not ponder... right then... ~ he thought to himself, rising slowly and making his way to a part of the Salandran temple outside, bowing his head to any whom pass.
"I'm just getting some air, I'll be right back." he said, quietly finding his way to a more peaceful part of the Salandran Temple's grounds past the Graveyard behind the recovery ward, where when he could tell he wasn't being watched or at least believed he wasn't, he invoked a rather prompt incantation, focusing his eyes and murmuring a question to himself quietly.
The Weave seemed to shape and focus itself into a mixture lens and timpanic membrane which would respond to subtle reverberations of the Weave, connected to his query. His senses seemed to connect themselves, trhough this lens and membrane at a near breakneck speed compared to the slower, and more methodical process that would be found by a similar spell ritual of less complexity.
"What is the Weakness of Speaker Joseph Maxmillian of the Commonwealth of Cordor?"
Tuomas felt his heart began to pound suddenly, the beat seeming to increase in pace and intensity.. a sensation felt not too long ago in the very room he had been occupying before. Not long after, the sensation of his mouth seeming to go dry as sandpaper took him, reminding him of a time where he had crossed into the threshold of one of the Wharftown Obelisk tests, finding himself bound to a chair across from Mayae. After, his hands shook, and a sudden rush along his spine which caused him to shudder, sending a flash that although not actually hot may as well for the metaphorical heat felt been a suddenly flash of smokepowder across his neck, followed by a realization which shook him from his split second state of divination inspired.
Feeling himself quickly pulled from his divination, Tuomas nodded to himself. Steadying himself a moment, the Gnomish Wizard nodded quietly, his answer clear yet, more questions remained.
~.. Questions to be asked soon, Tuomas. Questions to be asked soon. ~ he thought to himself as he made his way back to the Temple to rest.
