I have written a small FAQ (with map). It can be found here:

Let me know what you think of it and if I missed something.

This is just sooo wrong for a roleplay server. I can't even begin to explain how wrongety wrong it is to write up a "how to" guide for a roleplay server. We're not WoW, and the object is not "Winning", but to experience the other characters and the world around you. Sure, you can play solo, and if that's fun for you, go for it, but... honestly, I think this type of thing needs to be highly discouraged.

Nevermind, do what you want.... apparently we are becoming an MMO.

Post subject:  Re: FAQ (with map)

Well I don't say you're wrong, but I find the Fishing topic far worse than this guide (except for the fact that the guide includes some major, MAJOR BS like useless skill is spot / listen and useless feat is expertise).

But yes, in general people should find on their own. Be it the world, build or easter eggs

Yeah, I should write something about the roleplay aspect too. How to stay IC and gain DC's. Although I think most is covered by the ingame guide (journal) and this website.

Aww.. thats a shame. Of course you're free to use the feats. I think they're not very useful.

My poor heart. All of those are actively used in the game. Some of them are critical for getting into certain epic areas as well.

Also Animal Empathy is insanely good. You have never be with an Epic Ranger who grabbed a Brog Male Bison to hunt with the party then.

Post subject:  Re: FAQ (with map)

The map is not really accurate on how the areas are connected with eachother. I do not know if it was meant to show the vague locations of the areas, but that is also wrong, since some of the areas are totally misplaced.

I'm inclined to agree with That Guy and Guardian. Naming lore skill useless in an RP server doesn't really fit in the rp environment.
Roleplay is not an aspect here....the server is about role play. Everything else comes after that.

That gaping hole in the map could be Oakmist Vale druid's Grove, by the way.

Post subject:  Re: FAQ (with map)

I can say with all honesty that every single one of the skills you listed as useless are ones my characters use actively and are quite helpful. Additionally, the useless feats are extremely helpful to have. I fear that the others are right; too many are starting to view Amia as more of a WoW type game and not what it was meant to be; a role play server.

Okay. The idea of the map is to be exact (where each block stands for one ingame screen). If I missed something or something is not correct let me know.

I wish someone would do a map of B because holy shit I can never find anything there on my own. I don't even know how many 'islands' it is.

Also that FAQ blows. Throwing it on the pile of all the other 'unusual' things people have told me that make me question if they are playing a mechanically different game then I am.

Post subject:  Re: FAQ (with map)

I'd add a 'mandatory skill' section too, and include things like tumble which is a whopping six undispellable AC and the monsters on the server and essentially everyone who knows what they are doing is going to find a way to get that six AC.

You could also include information about Heal like "but it isn't always that good because any heal check made out of combat is a take20, meaning the only reason to level this skill is if you want to spend a round in-combat healing and want 30 more hit points for 30 skill points."

edit; going to work i'll help you make this better when I get home.

There is a Map room in Wiltun which pretty much shows everything you need to know about B. Except for the desert area of Khem because that is on the other side of Faerun

There could be a list but I think you should check out the maps that were made IG and compare yours with them.

Such as this one what Gravemaskin made:

Amia is barley multiplayer. Light years away from massive.

Other than that.. the FAQ itself is horribly untrue at some of the crucial points. The creator of the FAQ should definitely consult with a more experienced player. It's like an anti-FAQ.

Wow, thanks for posting this, found it very helpful. I was searching for a leveling guide just the other day. Having a map that shows monsters and a table that gives an idea of appropriate level to survive encounters is just what I needed.

I'm not sure I totally agree with the levels you've assigned to creatures/areas, but it seems generally on target.

And I give you tons of credit for keeping a positive attitude in your replies to the wall of criticism you've received. I wish we could all be so courteous....

You should always get tumble because +6 ac no matter what all the time is unbelievably good. Tumble is one of two skills I think is absolutely mandatory to have a character that can function in combat, the other is discipline, otherwise you just get knocked down every time you get hit and there's nothing you can do about it. Not only that, tumble lets you avoid aao's from moving 100% of the time, which is so stupidly good I don't even know where to begin.

Healing as a skill is less effective outside of combat w/o heal but who cares, just use more. The only real 'benefit' to high heal is cheaper heals in combat compared to heal pots, and you are somewhat better at healing other people, but considering how valuable skill points are, you're essentially allocating two extra points into intelligence just to have 30 more HP when you use a heal-kit.

Other issues with the guide;

"Easiest class to begin with is the wizard. The familiars and summons are greatly improved compared with the vanilla game."

Objectively not true. Not only does being effective at a wizard require someone to know HOW the summons are changed and how to change their summons, it also requires them to be the kind of person that wants to sit there invisible and let summons wail on shit, not to mention finding out the hard way which monsters can just see invisible.

You have craft weapon and armor as 'useful.' These are flavor at best because it's essentially trivial to get +40 on gear to each and just use gear to make whatever you want. These skill points are literally flavor only because they actually accomplish nothing you can't already do on your own on any character.

I'd also mention that raise dead scrolls can be used by anyone and are available in most towns.

Post subject:  Re: FAQ (with map)

I applaud your effort and like it. Just be aware things change over time so maps and information will too. Cut him some slack guys, he's obviously new to the game and learning as he experiences and to be honest, from the viewpoint of a new player who is pre-epic - his information isn't "wrong," just incomplete and to be honest, a lot of it is pretty spot on - if by luck.

I've considered making something similar myself, since NWN is an aging game with a dwindling playerbase and having a new player primer to the server would serve to bolster new player interest in sticking with playing Amia. Although the map endeavor is largely useless since areas come and go on a whim at times and I've too much to do than micromanage what area gets deleted or added every week.

Quote:
Useless Skills:
Animal Empathy
Listen
Spot
Lore

Search
Disable tap
Set Trap

This isn't too far off. I'd say animal empathy is pretty useless simply because endgame areas have zero animals to ever run into. Sure if I were a ranger or druid I'd get 1 point and some epic gloves, but once you hit 30 you'll never see another animal unless you're goofing off honestly. Listen/Spot are shrug-worthy simply because of hamstringing PvP rules and endgame combat-worthy gear has zero detection mods whatsoever anyways. Lore is worthless, period. Set Trap... is good for killing newbies, I guess - monsters will laugh at you with their saves.

Open lock and disable trap: 1 point will do if you know what you're doing. Search 0. Search is handy for finding secret doors/treasures, but you can just buff it with gear/buffs to find what's worthwhile.

If it makes you happy to catalogue and note things, rock on with your bad self. Other people need to remember the first rule of life: Don't be a dick.

Quote:

I have to agree it's not very fun though to stay invisible and wait it out (both for action as for RP), but it's easy and good for beginners. The only monster I found out so far who can see invisible players are the Bloodmoon Orc shamans.

From what I can tell, the main contention against this FAQ is that it's in an OOC format. Similar initiatives were started in an IC format and were met with praise, although as far as I know none of them got super far.

You're not obligated to, of course, but would you consider making an IC version of your FAQ, kind of how there are the "Volo's Guide to [insert topic here]"? I think that you would find a lot less resistance to that, and also it'd be a lot of fun to see whatever IC spin and narration you put on it.

On that token should we shut down the lore section on the game? The answer being find out in game? Most characters shouldn't know most of the major events of the world. A lot of find out in game to me translates to, I am old, played here for an extremely long time and it does not benefit me for everyone to have access to how the game works.

If we want to shout this is an RP server then lets remove all the boss grinding. That is flat out anti RP server it is a mechanic for farming and looting things, where people log on just to farm monsters. While we are at it, lets re balance the game removing the need for all the epic loot. RP wise there just shouldn't be all this magic floating around everywhere and the server itself is slanted more towards level 30 with epic gear (boss farming) to get into plots than just fun RP. One of the most fun things about D&D is a group of friends can have an amazing concept and take stats, skills based on it while having adventurers. That is a fancy way of saying builds should go as well. Builds are an OOC construct to maximize skills without any weaknesses. On a RP server it should be character development.

The Lore forum exists to help educate players, not characters, to get a better feel of the setting. Some people come to this server not knowing anything about how the Forgotten Realms works, what Faerun (or the other continents) are like, or what things Amia has changed about the setting. It helps paint the observable world around them. While some of the subjects brought up are not things that would be common knowledge, some of them are - things the common person would be aware of or be able to find out very easily. I think that, like most resources such as the core books, can be taken too much as assumed a PC knows everything the players reads in them - but that's just the usual issue of mentality with some folks, not the resource itself.

It doesn't need to be some fancy epic, just an IC lens - and don't worry about English not being your native language because there's a ton of people on this server for whom it isn't the first. You're fine. :D

For those stated purposed instead of a lore forum, a setting forum would work nicely:

City: Cordor
Population: 90% human, 120% rich merchants
Day to day life: The people of Cordor are more educated than the average person, due to being a major trade city. They care about coin first, race second. This has exposed them to many different races and deities not normally found in human settlements. The society is split into blah blah blah.

Nobility: Cordor Nobility does x, y, z and the people interact with the government by way of X, Y, Z.

Avg Citizen: The avg citizen is about X years old and this is what they do. Their style of dress is this.

A wiki page would be a great source for this sort of information, sort of a primer of how to play and fit into the setting.

That said, I will freely about the lore forums (which I use) was to address dealing with player knowledge vs character knowledge. Meta gaming however could be ended if players didn't know a lot more than their characters.

I love that map in your guide!
