I'd still like to see Raise Dead/Resurrection scrolls removed completely and make people rely more on Salandrans and other healing clerics than what is currently implemented.

Alas, my dreams of a hardcore RP server will fall by the wayside.

I've suggested that Heal should just be an uber-cure (eg. 1d8/level), Raise Dead should be removed, and Resurrection required for all raises. It will be nice to see what the fix is.

What Selvec Darkon said echoed my feelings at the time. It seemed very poor RP, they definitely did not ask me or a DM about it. However i hate 'ignoring' things in RP, like ignoring the fact that my head was severed from my body. I didn't like that Jarl'axle's actions gave me little choice about it - my only option is to ignore it. I was raised via a scroll 5 minutes after the battle ended, so, does that mean i'm technically still dead and without a head?

As Azarius suggested, the drow did go around to all the corpses very quickly and did: *decapitates*, *decapitates*, *decapitates*, etc, severing about 8 heads from their bodies in 15 seconds. This also seemed like very poor RP to me.

Yeah, it is. You don't have to go along with it if you don't want to, as well. If someone's being a lazy RPer and typing the minimum amount for a purely mechanical reason (i.e. countering raise dead) then just say you don't want your character decapitated, or ignore their emote (if you don't want to break RP with the dreaded //...).

Its a rule that you ask permission from the player before decapitating/maiming/torturing their character, so if they don't do that, they're not observing the rule.

Unless this rule's been changed?

There are certain people who do before asking. Infact an entire group. I don't need to mention names, I think everyone can guess.

That is taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Boley ... .281536.29

The reason a swordsman was chosen to behead her was because it was more quick and efficient, usually only needing one blow to remove the head where as an axe would take usually 2-4 blows to decapitate someone and was much more brutal.

Decapitation is nothing special. For speed and efficiency the IC thing to do would be to give each poor victim a quick thrust to the chest with a blade. Then you make tracks. The hell with worrying about someone coming along and raising them all, that's gonna happen at some point. The important thing is to not be standing around gassing with yer pals when they all come looking for payback.

Okay, first off:

@Azarius: Properly built, an SD will shank anything to death before it has a chance to run away. If you doubt that, go see Vaylek or come see myself for a quick informative lesson.

Second:

I'm all for decapitation. The part that sucks is when people run off with the head.... that's not cool. The people who decapitate their foes are the same people who have fallen victim to raise-spamming one too many times. It doesn't destroy RP, I don't care what anyone has to say about it. Your character bit the big one as you were soloing the other week. How did s/he come back anyways? That is as much a fudge on RP as the easily planned and quickly executed excuse for coming back from a beheading. If anything it creates conflict. Conflict generates more RP, it doesn't cause a lack of it. Be creative people!

Just skimmed some of the posts as I'm coming into this 2 pages going.

Decapitation's legit, no matter the weapon. All decapitation means is that the head is removed from the body, which means you can bludgeon the spine til the head cracks off, chop, saw, or cleave with anything from a dagger up, and well if someone wants to say they take the time with a rapier to pick you apart at the neck til the muscles no longer hold and wrench it off from there, go with it. The whole point is to remove the head which negates cheap-@$$ raise dead in PnP. Besides, the one who slays has the say in what happened to kill the fallen, that has always been the rule. If they say you're KO'ed, play unconscious for a while and don't be a dick about it and emote *waking up* as soon as you hit the ground. If they say you're just dead and you're not sure, ask them if you're in one piece. If they say you're decapitated, then you're decapitated, and even if someone raises you, if you want anyone to respect your RP you better respect the person's who killed you.

In summation, follow the same rules you do for the game and our server as a whole: Suck it up on the "physics side". Respect RP. Remember it's a fantasy game. And if it happens, role with it.

okay, so, you think it is cool to decapitate, but uncool to 'run off with the head'?! i guess we draw those lines in different places - because i find it very NOT COOL to have my character mutilated after death. The other player is being EXTREMELY discourteous IMO. I thought it was not allowed, or at least not without player/DM consent.

also, what do you have in mind for the 'easily planned and quickly executed excuse for coming back from a beheading' via a raise scroll? please enlighten me.

It seems like respawning or getting raised after PvM could have an easy RP excuse; you could say that you were just knocked out (if you respawned and came back to place of death), if a companion raised you via a scroll then you could say that that nasty orc did not manage to sever your head from your body, or if you die and wait until reset, you could say that a wandering cleric found your body in the bushes near the kobold caves sometime after death, you weren't so badly mutilated, and brought you back to life. In a more friendly, mutilation-free PvP, i would usually just say that the defeated party is 'knocked out' - since they're brought back via the PvP tool anyways. Those all seem easy enough to RP.

When someone severs your head from your body, it becomes a lot harder to make up some imaginable reason that you could be brought back, except through extremely powerful magic, as described by the resurrection spell a few posts ago. Since there was no such resurrection spell, my two options seem to be to RP that i'm perma-killed, or just ignore the whole beheading thing, and pretend it didn't happen. Both options seem dumb.

Why is it any harder to say your imaginary "wandering cleric" cast Resurrection instead of Raise Dead? It's just a level 7 instead of a level 5 spell.

As for Decapping, I know Vael had started a strand of it in the combat with the Banites around the time of the Undoer and for that I apologize, however it was to limit immediate returns into combat.

It's not harder, it's fine. but, i was beheaded and then brought back via a raise scroll, not a resurrection spell. my mistake, i guess i should have just lay there and pretended i was still dead (and so should have the 8 others that were beheaded in the 15 seconds that it took to RP the thing), until someone came along with a resurrection spell. I just didn't know how to deal with that kind of mutilation at the time, now i guess that is cleared up.

So, I started this thread wanting know how to deal with people that mutilate corpses after they're dead, and how it should be RP'ed. Like i've said earlier, i thought that was not really allowed / not cool / frowned on. It certainly felt NOT COOL at the time. But then again so many people seem to be all for it, i think i'll start chopping legs off people that i PvP, maybe pluck out their eyes, chop off their penises, etc. i mean, is that cool with most of you as well?

If i chop someone's legs off, and they're brought back via a raise scroll which says "Missing pieces will be missing after the spell is cast", do they now have to RP a character who has no legs, and just... lay there? it seems like that would be very uncool to do, but as Dark Immolation said, they should "respect my RP", right?

Hopefully the fix coming will... fix the problem and make the 'beheading' thing to prevent sneak-raises go away, but if in the future someone mutilates my corpse just for fun, should i screenshot that? or is mutilation cool? and if i'm brought back via a raise scroll with my arm chopped off, should i sell my greatsword and learn to use a rapier?

Thx,
Uber.

I also skimmed the topic, I'll admit, but I think I got the idea. Decapitations, for me anyway, were a tactic discussed IC during a gathering on how to prevent some common "in battle" practices. Among these were GS, portals, and battle raises from non-clerics. After beating it around for a while, it was a grim conclusion that if push comes to shove, you sometimes have to delve into some gross tactic to prevent a cycle of killing that prevents you from reaching a goal, and restoring peace/safety/order.

It is no IC secret that at any given time, people carry around dozens of raise scrolls, for perpetual fighting. It could go on for hours, and sometimes it comes down to who has the biggest supply. It think it's a legit tactic to try and render them useless, so long as there is an unlimited supply. Decaps are very grim, and I know my PC doesn't enjoy them, but she's not going to risk her living allies over a dead enemy.

That said, I'm looking forward to seeing the fix implemented for raises and heals. Excited even. I would rather not do beheadings, either.

Though, I do have a question. My PC has devastating critical. Is it legit to RP a beheading, if she lands a Dev Crit on someone?

We let the players decide that. It's really up to you. You aren't going to chop off the head -every- time, but still...

by 'we let the players decide that' do you mean both the beheader and the beheaded? that's how i thought these kinds of things should go, but then there are a lot of people in here who obviously feel it is completely up to whoever kills you, and you just have to respect their RP, no matter how discourteous.

I would like a DM's clarification on something, as people have made contradictory assertions in this thread.

I am given to understand from the spell description sidebar that Raise Dead does not restore decapitated bodies to life. But who is who decides if a body is beheaded?

Is it only when a DM declares it has happened?
Only when both the victor and the victim agree?
Whenever the victor says he cuts off the head?

If you're dead, you have no options. Period. You're dead. It's not about "discourteous". It's about your character is dead. That's already pretty discourteous. Losing your head after that is nothing.

Didn't read much of the topic; I can't believe there's actually a 2 page topic arguing about cutting someone's head off if they die, but it seems you guys will argue about anything just to argue about it.

Sounds like a bad day. I have seen much fighting in the Amia forest also. Actually, virtually every time I have gone there, there has been fighting. Which is frustrating because it is a public place, yet I do not wish to go there anymore, because I do not wish to get in a fight or beheaded.

Which leads me to wonder, how do the Rangers and Druids feel about all the constant fighting? Isn't the forest their home?

A good character probably would not go around lopping off heads even if it was to prevent enemies from being brought back on the battlefield. Decapitation stinks of demoralization, sadism, and general terrorism. It's an act of bodily mutilation done after the true combat.

Usually I agree with skimming a topic. But this time around, its probably not such a bad thing to read it.

The issue here is rather the awkard situation placed in after decaps. The fact is, permission is required for perma death. This is a rule, a rule in place and enforced by the DM's I believe. The problem is that raise scrolls and typical raise spells do not allow for raising of someone who has been decapped, this requires resurrection, a spell or scroll not so commonly found, and not something that someone may wish to go out of their way to get.

So what happens if your decapped without permission, and nobody wants to resurrect you, or nobody is around to do it. Your screwed. Espically if its followed up with RP disposing of the body. While you can come up with an eleborate piece of RP on how the body thats carrying all your loot and gold some how survived a plunge into the ocean, it does mess with the RP. Usually such explanations also leave a lot to be desired in terms of RP Qualility, bordering on cheese.

Thus the argument becomes about if one should be placed in this postion of awkaredness, forced to Perma-death, getting lucky and having a cleric friend, or pulling a cheese excuse. Should someone be put in this situation, and possibly even worse situations that force perma-death or cheese.

I know the official stance on this one, but I have to say, I still think it's crap that you're not supposed to intervene oocly on what happens to your toon if you get killed. Maybe if you were provoking a fight/okay'ing PVP, whatever, then since you were consenting to the violence then, yes, you have to take the IG consequences of it. But lord knows I don't PVP and I've still gotten killed by traps set out or AoEs from being in the wrong place at the wrong time, etc. Maybe that's my own over-sensitivity, I don't know.

And while I'm not going to site any specific incident I have in mind, I have to say that I, as a player, OOCly, am offended by a maiming of my toon's dead body and don't consent to it. If it happened to me, and I was just told told to suck it up, I'd be upset by it. And I'm not really a pansy despite my enjoyment of the flower. I know what the server stance is on it, but I'm giving my opinion here on it: I think the stance stinks. If it's not okay to RP rape, how is enduring a physical body mutilation any better?

Anyway, that's just my opinion, of course, and since I know that others disagree with it, I work extra hard to avoid PVP situations.

Not to derail this that much, but it's something of a sub-topic.

A week ago when I inevitably logged off and lost any care to play further, there was a situation between X faction and Y individual and Z onlookers. Dev crit rendered Y the victor, and I ended up dead for no reason after.

Rather than run about emoting *decapitate*, since the shadow dancers were caught, the plan was to burn all the bodies in a pile. Since I have no actual allegiance to Faction X, if this had occured would I have simply accepted a perma-death since I died after the fact and no one would really know/care I was dead?

Just curious.

Selvec, very well said!

Agree!

For the 897 billionth time. No one can perma you without your consent.

Decapitation is by far the least heinous thing I have seen done to a dead body. Gurth has literally been burned to ash and scattered to the four winds. Don't think that means for one second I as a player have to accept the finality of that.

If you have ever clicked the respawn button, then all arguments about rp cheese become moot. Or applied bandages in battle. Or rested in the middle of a conversation. We turn a blind eye to illogic all the time in this game. If you choose realism and permadeath in this one particular instance, no-one is forcing that on anyone. Decapitation is just a ridiculous solution to a ridiculous problem. It makes mass PvP more manageable, I think, and shouldnt be taken so deeply.

Decapitation shouldn't be all willy nilly. I'll pull out the PG-13 card for this one. (Thinking of younger players I know :) ) It's mutilation and should have consent in my opinion. You don’t want them to be raised to fight again then there are other ways to make sure they can’t get back into battle. And there’s no reason a quick “everybody ok with decap along with PVP?” can’t be asked before the fight starts.

Having been on the receiving end of decap without being asked, I thought it was rude and annoying. But it was done by a DM long before this question came up so I did just “suck it up”. As for recent times….it’s still rude and annoying to me. (I understand the issue of having to hurry to make sure folks just don’t start popping back up in the middle of PVP but we take the time to ask about torture so….)

However, I do understand not wanting dead combatants rising up out of the blue to fight again. That’s happened to me too. I confess I took great delight in sending one character back to the ground in their own blood 4 times in one particular battle. In which case I wondered how many times that could happen before insanity set in… I don’t think other players would necessarily have that kind of patience with the character who keeps getting raised.

Questions for the DM’s: Is a Decap considered mutilation and do you need consent to do it?

If consent is not given then is it automatically an agreement that the dead character will not accept a raise dead scroll to get back into battle?

Some characters just don’t have a cleric with resurrection so do we say that anyone who is headless that’s brought to the Salandran temple can expect to be resurrected?

Or do they have to wait where they were dumped for some random passers-by?

Remove all raise dead scrolls and other means of returning players to life outside of cleric spells. All death is permanent unless a cleric or druid shows up.

Problem solved.

I saw this in one of my now rare forays into this part of the forums and just had to comment. Any curved bladed weapon wielded by a decently strong person can cut someones head off pretty easily and without much effort. It's part of the reason they were created, for removing limbs and heads more efficiently.

Who needs an edged weapon? Just get a hammer. God, use your big clonky metal boots. Stomp their heads into paste. Knock them off with a club. Splatter their brains everywhere!

Hardcore and unnecessary. Just make it so spamming Raise scrolls in combat is impossible. Problem solved 100%.

The problem is not raising people in PvM, but in PvP.

Ok. I've said this twice now.

A fix will be released as soon as we iron out the details. You will be informed.

I just stand over the bodies and if somebody raises them cut them down as they are standing up. It works pretty effectively.

Dm said it was gonna be fixed, from here on out its only puffing chests, moaning, and pathetic attempts to garner attention...

In summation, what needs to be said, has been said.
1. RP = Role with the Punches
2. If you're strong enough to kill a dragon in 1 hit, you can easily slice a dead guy's head off.
3. Dm's have said they are working on a fix.
4. Winner's never Complain only losers (History is written by whom?)

So... this has served its purpose.

Note: I did say from here on out not above this post, dont get your panties in a wad.

That's being overly sensitive, sorry.
