Thought I'd put this under general discussion rather then off topic whete it started. As some might know we now have an Amia chat room on the IRC network irc.rizon.net and I thought it might be nice to have a link in the side bar of the amia website to draw some more people there. Perhaps even put a chat window on the site self for those who aren't familiar with one of the large variaty of chat clients for the IRC network. Or atleast some links.

I could provide a discription and guide to some of the more popular clients as well as a few fully web based ones like one I recently stumbled across at www.mibbit.com. Quite easy to use just click the "lauch mibbit webchat" icon, select Rizon in the pull down menu in the first white field, then fill in some nick name and enter as channel #amia and you're set to go.

Unnecessary traffic. Theres not more than 5 ppl in the IRC chat anyway, at least in euro time.

That's the point. If there was a chat link on the sidebar, there would be more people in there.

Will cut forum conversation, and thats bad, basically reducing usage of the forums and interactivity between forums members massively.

Hasn't thusfar, and it should more cut down on spam than anything else.

The chat option at the moment is through an obscure IRC method, using either a program like MiRC or that firefox addon. It's not really publically avaliable, just "if you want it to be".

Adding it to the sidebar makes it offical, and avaliable to all to use from the website. Meaning it will see way more traffic then any off site chat box or IRC client ever would.

Well I imagine that would be what is done.

Otherwise the O.P. is asking for a chat window, that is offsite, and out of Amia's ability to police or make sure doesn't have dodgey content, to be added to the sidebar, and thus offically endorsed by Amia. Dispite being completely out of Disco, Nekh or the entire DM teams control.

Which would be silly.

Well lets talk chat.
I don't think it would reduce forum activity, not even in the "off topic" section. Why? Simpel some things are easier and more fun to discuss on a forum, because on a forum you don't need the other people online at that moment for a reaction and in chat you do. Also its much easier to get to know people on a chat and getting to know people generally increases mutual respect. (Yes there will also be a rare few cases where it won't be so but thats always the case with everything).

I don't belief the chat should become a place to talk about in game things, post requests and manage such things.

Putting a actual chat window on the main site, I'll leave that to the DM team to decide. It's easy enough to find via google another website that allows you to log in without having to rub more then two brain cells together.

Any concerns about moderating the chat. I'm sure I can come up with a few easy guide lines and put all the dm's in the admin list. I got lots of experience moderating irc chat rooms and I think Gagis idea for the chat room is great and I'd love to see it continues. I spend as much time as possible on it to and will continue to do so and see that things are run well.

Well, any chat links should be just links we provide (like to the Wiki), without moderating. We have better things to do than nanny an OOC chat, nannying the forums and the server is enough of a job. DMs are primarily here for DMing, and the moderating is an extra task to keep nasty behaviour in check on the communication channels we provide and are located on the server.

Well, as long as I don't have to change the link every week I am fine with adding something.

I'll take care of the modding as far as it will be needed. I'll just add any dm to the list who wants to out of politeness. I be no means means to put more work on your desks.

I think it's a good idea you guys do it like the Wiki. It's player modded, probably some DMs would like to moderate as well. But overall, we just link to it for convenience.

Quite franking any serious modding is hopefully far far away. I presume players that can keep their behavior in check on the forum and in game can do it in the chat too. Heck don't even know who's all in the moderater list at the moment

We're trusting the community. I don't think that's too much to ask.

I believe he's referring to people who find Amia and decide to jump on the Amia IRC to troll, since it's an environment beyond our control.

I think it's plenty to ask, espically when people not apart of the community can also access it.

Chatrooms are silly things. There is a reason Microsoft, Yahoo and basically every big company that provided them publically got rid of theirs.

Being part of the community, I can tell you right now that the Amia's community is not mature enough to sensibly use a chat room. Heck, half of them aren't mature enough to not cyber on the server...

Whenever I've been on there, even with about seven of us, it was actually quite fun! There was playful banter yes, but nothing outside of what you might see in the off topic forum.

Most of the time I've found it to be just me with Sephira.

It has given me the opportunity of speaking with some people that I'd never have done without.

The most I've seen on at any one time is 6 including myself, but the pace of chat is so much more friendlier and responsive than say in the Off Topic section.

From a personal view, I've only recently started to embrace the extra layer of community, via WLM/MSN, Facebook, etc, and it has been undeniably helpful in my usual social reservations. That is only a good thing.

Over all, the attitude there has been fun, we've played games, discussed points of view, and even though there have been difference of opinion it has been polite and accepting nonetheless.

On the forum, people are more prone to give an enormous wall of text, sometimes unknowingly insulting/misinterpreting someone/something. But in the informal flow of chat, any misunderstandings are quickly and easily corrected.

So far, there has been nothing negative about the whole thing, and I think I may have been on there every day since its creation however long ago that was. Couple of weeks?

Small numbers are fine. You can count on your hand who is responsible for what. Putting it in the side bar thugh makes it accessible to everyone, and means the numbers will be increased.

You have to count the fact that the more accessible you make something, the more people will join, the higher likelyhood of abuse and bad behaviour. Chat rooms have a tendency to make that bad behaviour way more then the average spam bot, rather allowing things like cybering, bullying, abuse, coecion and many other more personal attacks.

My fear, is that a system as accessible as a chat room, will lead to wider variety of this bad behaviour. Bad behaviour that couldn't be moderated by Amia, but because it's placed in the sidebar, is some what endorsed by Amia.

Can't deny that your more likely to click something in the sidebar then you are something posted on the forums.

That is true, but even Amia has its responsible members that can moderate the chat in their free time.

I think Hadeismetirion is going to make a moderator-chatbot to help stop spammers. Might help?

I'm going to look gather the information for the sidebar page tomorrow and I'll have it done sunday.

As for moderators. Any DM can have moderator (@) status if they want to. And I'll just the regulars who've I've been chatting with in there since the chat started. That should be plenty. I don't espect the amount of idiot behaviour as in regular chatrooms.

As for the Chat Bot. That's going to take a little bit longer but I'll start on that this weekeind too. Getting it to log in and log chat, maybe op people to the moderator list (when the irc server fuction for that breaks down, which can happen) won't be to hard either. The rest I'm going to have to dig deep in some old project and kick some old chat friends.

As promised all the information needed to use Amia chat. I've tried to list the information I compiled in such a way that it can be pasted into a sidebar page as is. Though any comments or suggestions are most welcome.

Amia Chat on IRC.

This new service will allow you to enter real time chat with your fellow Amia players. To host the chat room we've chosen the IRC network. IRC (Internet Relay Chat), created in 1995 it is a free and easy to use system, providing for those of no experience and those with lots with an extensive and versatile chat environment. IRC consists out of a series of networks that are divided into many user controlled and run chat room. The server the Amia chat room run on is irc.rizon.net and the chat room name is #amia.

There won't be any chat window on the Amia site itself, but below will be given guides and descriptions for various web based and desktop based clients for IRC chat. First however some basic information and rules.

-People with an @ icon in front of their name, or another colour name depending on the client used, are chat room administrators/moderators, basically the DM's of chat. Not all of them are Amia DM's or forum DM's.
-The admins (@ people) are there to see to it that chat stays good mannered. As for what this involved. Well lets refer to the forum posting rules and those of the Amia server. You know how to behave properly in game and on the forum, so use proper sense to act properly in the chat too. There should be no need to type out a full list of rules. You'll be notified if you make yourself a nuisance. If you do so there is the option of kicking you out of the chat room, or banning you for a certain time.
-The chat room is not to act in the way the forum does, with exception to the "off topic" area. This is no place to make DC requests, bother DM's about them, complain about bans or DM decisions you do not agree with. It also isn't a away to meta game or in any way circumvent any forum or in game rules.
-When choosing your nickname feel free to use your forum or login name, perhaps a character name or your regular chat name. Do not however use other peoples login's or character names.
-Lets speak English in the chat room and lets have short cut language kept to a minimum, not everyone gets that stuff.
-If there are any complains or you have a need to contact me, use forum mail and mail to hadeismetirion.

www.rizon.net (web client)
The main site of the Rizon server. Simply go to the site and select "launch Rizon IRC" on the right side of the screen. Then simply enter your nickname at "Nickname" and #amia at "Channels" and select connect to chat.

www.mibbit.com (web client)
Mibbit provided a quick and easy to use way to log in to IRC rooms via your web brower. Simply go to the site and select "Lauch Mibbit Webchat". Now look to the first of the three white windows to appear. Take the pull down menu and select "Rizon", now fill in your desired nickname at "Nick" and enter #amia at "Channel". Now simply select go and you're ready to chat.

mIRC is a comprehensive program for chatting and managing IRC chat rooms. Once having downloaded the program on www.mirc.com and having installed it. It is easy enough to get connected. There is a register option, but it isn't required. The program is free to use. Once you clicked away the register messages look for the "options" in one of the left most icons in the toolbar. The important option to note is "Connect" and the sub option "Servers". These you'll need to be able to chat properly. The others are worth looking into if you have the confidence.

Under "Connect" fill in your "full name" and "Email address", you can fill in any nonsense here. The next two "Nickname" and "Alternative" are important, these are you nickname and the alternative nickname the program will use in case the original one becomes unavailable. The option "Invisible mode" allows other people to see or not to see you name and email. Now go to the sub-option "Servers". Here look for Rizon, or irc.rizon.net, select under Rizon the "Random server" option and press select. Now close the options with "OK" and press the connect icon in the toolbar. If correct you'll see the program connecting with rizon.net. Once connected type in "/join #amia". You should now be in the Amia chat room.

Providing Firefox is already installed, go to the Mozilla website, select "add-ons", and search for "chatzilla". Select the result called "ChatZilla" Its description: "A clean, easy to use and highly extensible Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client." Now click the "Add to Firefox" Icon and install the plugin.

Once it's been installed correctly the option "Chatzilla" should become available under the heading "tools" in the menu bar. Opening this option will pop-up the ChatZilla window. Now to connect to the Amia chat room do as follows. First type "/nick" followed by your nickname. Then type "/attach irc.rizon.net" to connect to the server, then type "/join #amia: to enter the chat room.

Here below are listed a set of the basic text commands used by IRC. Most work in nearly all IRC clients, but none except the first set are really needed and even the first you can usually do without. KEEP IN MIND: Nicknames can be registered for the entire server, so sometimes you wont be able to use a nickname, or get a warning, or after a minute or two get kicked by the server for having chosen a nickname that is already registered. Just choose another nickname and try again.

join channel: /join <channel>
Enter a chat room/channel.
quit channel: /quit
Leave a chat room.
quit with reason: /quit <text>
Show other chatters a departure message when leaving the chat room.
change nick: /nick <new>
Changed your nickname.
emotion: /me <text>
Allows you to emote in a chat room.

register nickname: /nickserv register <password> <email>
The register command allows you to register a nickname with the server so that only you can use it. This wont be needed to chat in Amia chat, unless you're a chat room moderator.

identify nickname: /nickserv identify <nick> <password>
This command allows you to identify yourself as the owner of the nickname you are using. If you have registered your nickname, you'll need to input this command every time you log in.

recover nickname: /nickserv recover <nick> <password>
This command allows you to reclaim your nickname when someone else is using it. This only works if the nickname is registered to you.

release nickname: /nickserv release <nick> <password>
If the recover nickname command won't work. Try this one first. For safety reasons the server can lock a nickname when someone else is using it. This will unlock it and allow you to reclaim your nickname using the recover nickname command.

ghost a nickname: /nickserv ghost <nick> <password>
Sometimes when getting disconnected your nickname will remain logged in. This command can help remove this "ghost" nickname. If this doesn't help either wait several minutes or use the release nickname, or recover nickname command.

drop a nickname: /nickserv drop <nick>
This will unregistered the nickname, which will be confirmed by email.

send password to email: /nickserv sendpass <nick> <email>
The sendpass command will allow a user to request that his or her nickname password be sent to the email address on file for that nickname.

The bolded/underlined things are one of the bigger issues I have with the Chat being in the sidebar.

Some people who are not a DM may be suseptable to favoring and stuff. It's not a big issue, but it's something that may happen, espically since Amia DM's are picked on the standard that they won't do such things.

The other thing is assuming that people will know how to behave on a forum. Not many do, not many that do interact on the forum now know what behaviour is appropriate, so yea. I suggest you do write at least some guidelines or rules. I also suggest, and this is heavily, you link to the Amia forum rules as a guide to how people have to behave in the chat.

Umm.. How does favoritism come in to play in IRC chat?

I don't think so. We do have our inside jokes already though...

Ok guess this is as good a topic as any to anounce that I have RETURNED!!!

Yes internet modem died took two weeks to get a new one. Terrible timing but ok. I'll be back in the chatroom as much as possible and I hope other players will do the same. I'll also start looking into getting some cheap ass laptop to run the chatbot from so it can say online 24/7.

To adress the comment of favouring people. There are plenty of regular players that chat on a regular basis with Amia DM's via MSN. So well need I say more?

Self perpetuating cycle

Well Disco didn't want a chat panel in the side bar. But he would link a page with some information on it. I listed all the info for it in this topic, a few posts up. So we just have to wait and keep the topic active so folks don't forget. I'm presuming more people will log in once its in the side bar.

Does anyone use this anymore? I notice when I sign in it is utterly empty.
