I think it's not intentional.

When using assassin skills granted by trainer they subject to AS failure. Just happened to me twice with Obscuring Mist.

That a bug, right?

You’ll need to learn the following spells from an NPC who’s hidden on the isle of Amia (if you meet the required Assassin levels and intelligence!). Note that these "spells" are in widget form and are affected by Arcane Spell Failure where the default assassin spells are not:

It's a thing.

Oh crap. :x

Any justification for that, or it's homebrew? I mean it should be a skill, not a spell, right?

Well, the spells are spells. Assassin do usually get spells, and I think the "skills" are supposed to represent that. And, since they're arcane, ASF applies.

Let me put it this way then, because I do not think their skills should qualify as spells.

Why do default assassin "spells" surpass ASF and Amia "spells" doesn't?

What if you build a str. based assassin? You're heavily punished as you are almost unable to use these "spells" because of full plate/shield ASF penalty, even if you pass the inteligence reqs.

Sure, spells should get ASF. However, spell-like skills should not.

Well, I think it's basically because the default spells are coded that way by Bioware.

I don't think it's a huge deal, personally, because I'm plate-swapping scum, but yeah. It fits, if we're being strict lore-wise, but I don't really see the balance need behind it.
That said, Obscuring Mist is shit, tbh, you'll want to use ImpInvis and Freedom before a fight, and darkness shouldn't check ASF, because it doesn't have a somatic component, so the only spell you might want to use is invis, and using that in combat is risky anyway.
