Lumberjacks perform the hard work of cutting down trees and delivering the felled timber to the Sawyer or Refiner. They literally live on the fringe of village society. True, peasants go into the woods and gather branches, but woodcutters spend most of their time in the forest, and to a villager anyone who lives in the wild —that is to say, beyond the boundaries of village and town and castle— is deeply suspect. In folk tales, the shepherd and the woodcutter are the very symbols of a dangerous association with the wild.
